... 5 front, 2 rear speakers?
For anyone how attended a presentation at an SDDS theater, this would have been the layout. In fact a great many Sony films had been produced in this format: 2 stereo channels, 2 effect channels, 1 center channel + 2 rear channels. I only had the opportunity to attend one SDDS presentation and it was stellar. For those who regularily attended presentations, what are your thoughts on the 5.1+2 presentation and do you think home video would be better served with it? |

I believe the thing with SDDS is that it depends on the size of screen you are using. (please don't bite off my leg if you think this is incorrect
![]() When you use 3 speakers for the front sound in a theatre there can be slight holes in the sound between the centre and L or R speakers. the LC and RC speakers that Sony use help to get rid of this effect. If you have a home setup using either a large plasma or projection screen, you will not be experiencing this effect, As the spread of the speakers would be much narrower. I have read this somewhere and can't remember the source, might try to find it for. But it makes sense to me as an audio guy. Cheers |

Add 9.1 ch. for future on new HVD formal....that's weird!
I thought that's 8.1 ch. because add 1 channel for behind back like a center speaker. left and right front, center, left and right rear, extra back right and left rear, add a behind back speaker = total 8.1 Ch. look like draw a star on paper for 5.1 ch. look like draw a circle pie cut 8 for 8.1 ch. 7.1 ch ????? 9.1 ch ??????? The "five up front" classic Todd-AO 70mm audio design is only effective in movie theaters with really large screens. Back in the 1950s when Todd-AO was first developed most theaters were large, single screen builds -especially the ones that would show 70mm movies.
I see little to no need for 5 stage channels in a home theater setup. It would only make sense for a really large projection setup where you could place 5 towers behind the screen. The overwhelming majority of home viewers have modest to small sized TV screens. Even if one could cram 5 speaker towers near and over or under the TV set the viewer wouldn't pick out the channel separation unless he was sitting really close. It's simply more effective to use those two extra channels of audio in 7.1 out in the surround field. Two side surrounds and two back surrounds can be distinguished more easily than a 5 up front scheme. Regarding SDDS, very few movies supporting the format in theatrical release featured 7.1 channel mixes. Complicating that further, very few theaters equipped for SDDS were wired for 7.1 presentation. The vast majority of SDDS-equipped theaters were wired merely for 5.1. |

Judging by the modded cars passing by my house a few times a day, some folks would be happy with a reverse audio standard - 1.40 where 1 stands for a cheap main audio channel plus 40 subs drowining out whatever audio information is fed through the 1 audio channel.
