![]() Maybe to save wear and tear on the PS3 optical drive so it will have more gaming life? We do need to know though if you want to use the lossless audio formats, and what type of receiver you have to see how to get you those lossless formats. |

Personally, I would go for a BD-Live unit since there's always the possibility of something interesting coming down the pipe. Panasonic DMP-BD35 would appear to be the most fully featured entry level player and covers all the bases, and would be my current choice for a standalone. But I'm happy with the PS3 - mine's pretty quiet... (I would hold out until we see units with wireless.. hope that is coming sooner or later) Last edited by blu2; 11-23-2008 at 09:27 PM. |

If you have a Kmart nearby, this would be an excellent buy for you:
http://bfads.net/Sony-Bluray-Disc153...-Kmart-Fri-Sat The Sony BDP-S350 does all the audio codecs (bitstream) as well as being 2.0 compliant. It also has excellent PQ and AQ. This is the player to get at that price range. |

I just replaced my PS3 with a S550 and would not turn back. I actually am selling my PS3 because I do not use it now. I use my 360 for games (I know not a popular choice here). I got into the stand-alone for its bitstreaming and have to say I have noticed a difference in sound quality with my receiver doing the work. So for me the PS3 was not the best, it left me wanting more. The upconvert on the S550 over the PS3 more than makes up for the slightly slower load times.

I'm going to get a Blu-ray player, and was going to wait until the next price drop on PS3's (I know, not until after Christmas at the soonest). The reason was because I've never heard a complaint about it locking up or not being able to play a disc. That being said, does anyone know of a stand-alone player that:
1. Plays ALL discs without freezing (Sony and Pana seem good choices from reading this thread). 2. Is firmware upgradeable by the user, either via USB flash drive or a burned disc. Seems that people get burned when a Blu-ray standard change comes out and their player can't handle it. PS3's get updates, so they don't have this issue. Sorry if I'm way off base here. Just trying to learn. 3. Is under $250. I also want to get the Pioneer 50" Plasma 5020 (not elite). Amazon does a white-glove delivery for ~$2500. Any reason NOT to get this? I'm going to wait until the March sales for this one. Price should be at least $500 less. This second off-topic point is an afterthought. Lots of time to research this more by March. Primarily, I want to get the player now, so I can stop buying old DVD tech that I'll regret later. |

Do you have a receiver that decodes DTS-HDMA and TrueHD? |
