Default HD DVD Clearly Leading in Next-Gen DVD Sales

Quote:
Saturday, March 31, 2007

By Mark Hachman

"Within three years it will just be HD DVD." – Tadashi Okamura, the Toshiba chairman, at the APRILone trade show.

According to the latest sales numbers from Nielsen VideoScan, the HD DVD format appears to be gaining momentum.

It's now March, and HD DVD appears to be holding its edge -- proving either that the assumption was incorrect, or that HD DVD's apparent momentum didn't need the crutch. Moreover, the total of HD DVD discs sold now outweighs the number of Blu-Ray discs sold, giving both the short-term and long-term edge to Toshiba's format.

Well now that the day is kinda over, well reading the real article (the one that says BDs rule) and using a sales figure that's been circulatiing for one of the titles in the article, I did this leetel table:

RatingIndex% Title Sales:

469 Casino Royale 100k
100 Batman 21k
99 Departed blu 21k
89 Superman Returns blu 19k
85 Superman Returns red 18k
64 Underworld Evo 14k
61 Departed red 13k
52 Mission Impossible III red 11k
50 Mission Impossible III blu 11k

numbers rounded to nearest k for simplicity

Maybe that explains why Warner didn't put LPCM on Happy Feet, they tried to get more of a Superman Returns HD DVD sales ratio... instead of it being a possible HD DVD masacre ratio like the Departed , which wouldn't have looked good..

I thought The Departed sold 20,000 the first week and sold 23,000 by the end of the following week. Are some of these numbers 1st week numbers?

I used the departed 13k sales for red and 20k sales for blu (so 34k total? vs your 43k total?) that was quoted at one point as basis to make the comparison table using the PCmagazine/VideoScan Ranking-Index% numbers given in the article. Like a Rossetta Stone

The Departed 99 and 61 index% almost fitted those perfectly so I went along with it:

61/99 gives 13k red -> 21.098k blu (or 20k blu -> 12.323k red) so seems both the index and that sales quote refer to the same time period so I went with that to calculate the others. I then added how Casino Royale would fit into that scale.

You can also see the M:i:III numbers computed that way (52 = 11.08k + 50 = 10.66k = Approx 22k) are close to the press release given when it was the number one High Def title sold with total 20k copies but Paramount didn't wanna say what where the exact red/blu proportions then)

If they gave exact sales numbers per week these little estimates wouldn't be necessary at all

But with this, we can have a rough idea where things stand

I wasn't saying 43K total. I was saying 23K total, for Blu-ray, after two weeks...for The Departed.

Ok, using your 2nd week 23k blu Departed numbers (which would be compounded after Feb 28 and the PCmag/VideoScan data is from March 4:

RatingIndex% Title Sales:

435 Casino Royale 100k
100 Batman 23k
99 Departed blu 23k
89 Superman Returns blu 21k
85 Superman Returns red 20k
64 Underworld Evo 15k
61 Departed red 14k
52 Mission Impossible III red 12k
50 Mission Impossible III blu 12k
