Question Help Finding a deal On Sound Setup Under $399

Hi i was wondering if you guys could help me find a deal for a sound setup under $399.

My dad wants 7.1 Surround and i know you guys are very experienced with audio equipment. I am not an audiophile, nor is my dad, so we aren't too exprienced with what is good, bad and over priced ect.

I just bought him a blu-ray player for his birthday thanks to the help i received from this forum , he is lovin it by the way.

is that even possible a 7.1 setup under $399?

$399 will, no doubt, be cutting it close for a 7.1 setup but I imagine that it can be done with a little research. However, you should definitely read this thread, as I think it will be of great help to you for a rough idea:

I would HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the Onkyo HT-S5100 7.1 Channel Home Entertainment System! It is currently $346 and some change.

http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-S5100...7948762&sr=8-2

It comes with free shipping. This system is by far the best 7.1 system that you will find under $400 IMO. You can just read the reviews and they are all pretty much saying how awesome of a system it is. I can also attest from personal experience that it is an awesome system. I love mine! Buy it now!

Can the room support 7.1? Although I would love a 7.1 system, my room could not handle the speaker placement. Reason is that my couch is up against the back wall and the Back surround speakers would not be able to be placed accurately.

Also, the Onkyo 5100 may be in your price range, but you would be better off getting the 6100. Since the 6100 comes with the 606 receiver, you get HDMI switching versus pass through.

The diference betwen HDMI switching and pass throguh is whether you get audio over HDMI. Pass through just passes the video signal to your TV , whereas switching will accept the audio and allow your receiver to process the sound to your speakers. With pass through, you will still need to run a separate audio cable, i.e., TosLink, Coax, or analog. Depending on your blu-ray player , this could determine whether you can enjoy the HD ausio from lu-ray movies.

Also, Suzuman600 has the 6100, as per his sig, and not the 5100. There is a BIG difference between the two.

If you can swing a little more in your budget, you will be happier in the end with the Onkyo 6100 or better yet an Onkyo 606 and Polk 6750 5.1 speakers. You will need to bump up your budget to around $550 or so, though.

Normally I wouldn't recommend an HTIB system but if I were to buy a 7.1 HTIB system for $400, it would absolutely be this no questions asked. Last year, this was Onkyo's best HTIB system (other than their THX HTIB that, however, didn't do HD audio).

Driver's recommendation is good, but I think that I would suggest the 6100 over that only because it comes with the 606 receiver instead of the 605 and you'll get an extra hdmi port out of it. Its about thirty bucks cheaper when you include shipping if you buy from newegg.com. Both systems come with the exact same speakers/sub setup. The 908 comes with an upconvert dvd player, but if you have a PS3 or other blu-ray player then why bother. I think the extra hdmi is more practical and you save $30. This is still beyond his $400 budget, but I don't think much can be found for that price in a 7.1 configuration. You may also want to look at THIS Sony setup which fits right into your budget. Its getting some good foodback on AVSForum. For $350 with free shipping I don't think you can do much better.

Total: $406 Six dollars over budget

If you want 7.1 add 2 more speakers for $30
