Doesn't look that great for the PS3 and amazing the Wii is still selling so well. Also, why does Sony continue to sell the PS2? Are they afraid that if they discontinue it, current PS2 owners will move to the Wii or x360 instead of the PS3?

At this rate who on this planet still doesn't have a PS2, I can't believe those numbers.. Freaking Wii is still going insanely strong as well which I also don't get..

Pretty clear being the most expensive by far is causing a disparity for the PS3 numbers. Granted the PS3 is in a league of its own but still $400 is a tough pill to swallow during these times of hardship.

Amazing numbers for the Wii.

As for ths PS3, it's lagging Nov '07 numbers while Wii and 360 have growth. Odd console out in the recession.

I'm not shocked by these numbers at all. With the state of the economy, I bet people are only looking at price tags when they buy their kids gifts. I'm blown away by the Wii numbers though, just wow.

360 vs PS3 isn't too surprising to me. $$ talks, and right now people don't have any. I'd be curious to see the breakdown of sales by SKU.

This is very sad news for the PS3. Even with the late start to this generation I was expecting the PS3 to eventually surpass the Xbox 360 in North American lifetime sales. I do not expect that to ever happen now. It will be a third place console in the U.S. for the rest of its lifecycle. Not cutting the price here has crippled its growth. I assume developers will continue to focus on the Xbox 360 first because of sales potential.

Yah this gen in the US is written, theres no possible chance that the ps3 could overtake the 360 in the US. At this point, i doubt even worldwide. Sony really effed this gen up.

This is what depresses me. A thoroughly mediocre game developer uses a kickass engine to sell over 2 million copies?

I can't believe people are still buying PS2's! WHY? It's old and outdated, yeah it may have a great library, but come on now!

That's pretty significant. A pretty sizeable drop in sales compared to last year while the X360 and especially the Wii enjoyed gains over last year.

This was predicted after it was decided to not drop the price of the PS3 however I would have never expected the sales of their big titles (LBP and R2) to be so horrid.

Now you have all media outlets saying Sony screwed up not dropping the price in this market and the PS3 is a sinking ship. Then you add on top of this that suppsoedly they might not drop the price of the PS3 for another year. Sales are going to drop every month next year as long as the price remains unchanged. Not even the big titles are going to change it because obviously it's doing nothing for sales right now.

Basically I think this was a big mistake not to drop the price on the PS3 but I guess we'll know for sure if sales drop off every month next year. Imagine sales going back to 2007 (before it dropped in price)?

Those numbers for the Wii and PS3 are a little off. It should read...

Playstation 3 378,001
Wii 2,039,999

I just talked my in-laws into returning their Wii and getting their kids a PS3 with LBP

Did you ask the kids what they wanted? I've never seen a kid that didn't have a blast playing the Wii. When I was a kid..... I'd have had much more fun playing Wii than LBP. Sure, as an adult my tastes are different, but the Wii is an AWESOME console for kids.

You are right. I have both systems and whenever they come over, the PS3 gets used 80% of the time. They would have had a blast playing the Wii, but they are getting close to being teenagers, and I think a teenager would rather have a PS3. But what really sold them was my wife (their sister) can play with them online. We live about 3 hours away, and this way they are able to keep in touch, i.e LBP, Home, PS Eye. Plus I think their dad wants to play CoD with me when they are sleeping .

Well that makes more sense. When you said kids, without specifying an age, I was thinking smaller kids.

Im guessing when sony obviously sells 2 to 300,000 more systems this month people will still call it a failure

Lasts year they sold 786,000 for december, im expecting around the same this month or a little less.
