37" TV, 1366 x 768 Rez, Blu-Ray capability question - Blu-ray Forum

Hey guys,

Just got a Blu-Ray drive a week or two ago and have connected it to my computer. I have a VGA connection going to the TV and a DVI connection going to my monitor (22.6" WS). The TV model is a Dell W3706MC which has a resolution of 1366 x 768.

My graphics card is a 8800 GTS 320MB and everything is HDCP ready.

I heard that Blu-Ray movies output to 1080p, but the resolution of my TV is only 1366 x 768. The movie looks great, but I'm assuming it gets scaled down to the resolution. Is that true?

Also does it matter if I use a DVI or a VGA connection to my TV? Does one look better than the other?

I have a 19 inch HP monitor with DVI connections and I use to use it strictly for my ps3. it was only outputting 720p resolution but overall it looked good because of the screen size. 1080p is only good for tvs bigger than 40. DVI is a better chord than a vga. DVI outputs up to 1080i i think but w/out sound. I have a DVI-HDMI cable cord. So it worked good when i was using the HP. 37 inch tvs are good size and also depends on how far your sitting from the tv. Ever thought of a 1080p upgrade? there cheap in a lot of places. Anyways enjoy your monitor. let me know how it is

Thanks for the help. Well the quality on both of my devices are amazing! Should I run the DVI to my TV or keep the DVI to my computer monitor and the VGA to the TV?

I'd certainly try the DVI and see if it looks any different to you, but if you're not having and HDCP issues you may want to just leave it.

However, I wanted to chime in re: the fallacy that screen size is the ultimate identifier of what resolution looks "good". Saying that 1080p is only good for tv's 40" and up is FUD. The truth is that it is entirely dependent on viewing distance. If you're sitting 15ft away, then 1080p and 720p are going to look the exact same. However, sitting at reasonable distances there is a difference regardless of screen size.

There's a great chart floating around that shows the approximate ratio between screen size, viewing distance and discernable details in 1080p vs. 720p.

That's what I was trying to explain, if you had like a 19 inch HD monitor or tv and u sit close to it, its gonna look the same as if you had a big 1080p tv and u sit far away. Am I right?
