Default Charlie And Chocolate Factory(Johnny Depp Remake) 03/17/09

It looks like Warner will be releasing in Bluray one of the few catalog titles available in HDDVD only. From what I understand from this page, Warner is releasing the movie in the U.S. on march 17th. Heres a link:

http://www.planetahd.com/

Usually this site has been accurate in releases dates.

I hated the Burton/Depp remake. It was one of the only movies I've ever seen in theaters that I almost walked out on. The only thing that kept me there was that a large group of us saw it and I didn't have a ride home.

Gene Wilder was right in saying this movie never had to be done.

This comment made me laugh a little.

But not too much, since I barely have a sense of humor.

Hopefully this being released can make some headroom for the original Wonka film to get a "Ultimate edition" style release. It might take a couple more years, but if my math is correct, it's 40th anniversary is coming up in '11. Though I don't want to wait that long.

i'll agree with you 100%. the open was promising, but after 20 minutes i wanted to just leave. i just couldn't stomach how silly it was.

the newer version is supposed to be silly.thats how Dahls books are.silly and weird u guys dont undersand the original with gene wilder was like a re-imagining of Dahls book. even the title was changed to willy wonka instead of charlie and the chocolate factory. the songs in the Depp version are also in the book. so the newer version is actually a better representation of Roald Dahls book.

The remake does look great in high def, though (I have the HD DVD), since the picture is so colorful. The HD DVD release of Willy Wonka was a little lackluster.

March is shaping up to be Tim Burton month with this and the Batman titles coming out.

Actually I liked a lot, not as much as the original, but I liked it a lot. My HDDVD has excellent sound and the colors looks beautiful. I hope Warners makes a product at least in the same quality as the HDDVD, since this is one of the few HDDVD I still have waiting to be replaced in Blu.

As long as the film gets a lossless audio track I will buy it ... but I wish they'd release Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory out the same day.. that'd be cool.

all right! woohoo! I liked this film alot. Never cared for the original, the Dahl estate never liked it either, despite it's popularity.

yes, Planet of the Apes was dog caca, but Charlie was alot more faithful to the book than the 70's film.

No it wasn't. The only truly unfaithful element of the classic was the different songs and the "bad egg"/"bad nut" scene. The recent version nailed the "bad nut" scene rather well (I never did understand why they changed it to geese and golden eggs), but also was not entirely faithful to the songs, and they also added a ton of backstory for Willy Wonka and stuff that makes no sense. The ending is also drastically different. Neither of them really got the Oompa Loompas right.

I liked the way they handled Wonka's look in the recent one (particularly the pale skin), but the hair was wrong. Should've been wild like in the classic. Color is irrelevent, but when you make it so "perfect" and in-line, it takes away the message it says about him as a person.

That aside, I like the visual styling a little better in the new one I think. The sharp colors and brilliant imagery. A shame they bungled the story and tried to make Wonka a real person rather than a character. The sad part is that I bet Depp could have probably hit the sweet spot like Wilder did if he had been given proper direction. Instead they pushed the character into another direction that really makes him completely unfamiliar.

It was meant to be unfamiliar. The perfect hair was meant to show the new character's OCD considering his own looks. He has to have his teeth shiny and clean too.

I think the movie is much better the second time. After you've excepted it more's a re-imagining than a remake. And AnnaSophia Robb and that boy are great.
