Default Black bars on Pan 58pz800 model when using blu-ray disks

Hello,

New here and just recently bought a Panasonic 58PZ800 plasma and a Panasonic DMP-BD35 blu-ray player. Was watching a blu-ray movie for first time last night with the kids (Polar Express) and had black bars on the top and bottom of the screen.

I checked all the settings on the TV and player to make sure everything was set correctly. Only way to fill the screen was to press the "Format" button on the TV remote to Zoom, but that cut off a lot of picture.

I then updated the firmware to the latest version (1.6) and just played the movie again, but still getting the black bars. Now, I just put in our other blu-ray disk (Wall-E) and it does the same thing. Some parts of the intro show on the full screen but the movie itself has the black bars.

Thus I am here to see if I am doing something wrong or missing a setting. Or if it is supposed to be this way, why?.....since the aspect ratio is 16:9.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Kg

Aspect Ratios - The Director's Vision

Why Don't the Black Bars Go Away?

that's how some movies are made.

Nothing wrong with your TV - only your expectations were wrong. No movies are shot in a 16:9 format.

that's incorrect.

1.78:1 is 16x9.

No need to feel like that, you did not know, you were not sure, you asked.

Nice TV!
Most dvd/bd will list on the back of the case what aspect ratio the movie is shot in. Just in case you're interested in knowing before you play the disk...

I'm not too fond of black bars anymore, now that I have a smaller TV (42 inch). I would usually use my families big Pioneer but now I just watch my TV
