Default What should I buy?

Hi guys,

I am set to invest in a player and am wondering via opinion which you think is best. Should i go for a standalone or should I opt for the PS3. Granted they say some of the standalones aren't the best at the minute but with firmware updates is it going to be an issue?

Any advice (with links if possible) would be outstanding.

Thanks in advance.
Stu

For value the PS3 for $599 is a very good Blu-ray player that also plays games, CD’s and Super Audio CD’s.
If you are not interested in games and own one of the rare highend 1080P/24 displays the Pioneer Elite Blu-ray player for $1500 is the worlds best in terms of picture quality. The Pioneer is not perfect; it does not play CD’s,etc.

BOTTOM LINE If your main goal is getting top-notch video performance from a Blu-ray Disc player, Pioneer's BDP-HD1 is the one to buy. Of the four players I've tested so far, this model was by far the picture-quality standout.”

Remember that the PS3 can have 1080/24 w/ a software update from Sony. Also, if you want lossless audio, check if your receiver has HDMI inputs. If it does not and you really want to use the PCM track, you'll need a stand-alone player because the PS3 doesn't have analog audio outs.

I don't have any surround sound items yet nor do I have a receiver. I am basically starting from scratch. I just hope my TV is ok and up to the job.

Seems the PS3 is the favourite.
