Default DVD 5.1 Audio vs. Blu-Ray 2.0 Audio

I recently purchased a Sony BDP-S350 player. I have an HDMI cable going to my TV which is sending my audio to my old Sony STR-K840P receiver. I am using a coax cable from the TV to the receiver. When I play my DVDs on the new player, I get 5.1 audio; but, when I play Blu-ray discs I only get 2.0 audio. My receiver is set on "Auto Decide" and it has a light for "Multi Channel Decoding" which comes on for the DVDs but not the Blu-ray discs. I am forced to use the prologic for the Blu-ray discs. Any ideas on the problem?

Turn off "auto decide" and put it on bitstream. It's decoding lossless audio and sending it out via optical or digital coax to your receiver as 2.0.

I don't see any way to change to bitstream. Perhaps it is time to get a new receiver.

Bitstream should be on the player, not the receiver.

You got me in the right direction. My problem was that the "BD Audio Settings" was set to Mix instead of Direct. Apparently when it is set to Mix, it outputs in a 2.0 format.

Thanks for your help.
