different picture modes matter???

I've asked this before, but never really got a decent answer. If I put the exact same settings for brightness, contrast, etc...into every picture mode, will the end result be exactly the same when flipping modes? Hope that makes sense. I currently calibrated my plasma in the "custom" picture menu, but I've seen people say do it in the "film/cinema" setting. Also, are there some magic chips that come into play when having the different modes? Does VIVID use anything different than CINEMA? Do you see what I'm saying? Just wondering if anyone has tested this, thought I would ask before I start jacking up all my settings. thanks.

I have an XBR2 and for every input I have going into the TV I have a separate picture mode for it.I try to stay away from Vivid, for my HD Direct TV I used standard and for BD I use custom.

thanks, but doesn't really answer my question, and I've turned to tweaktv before, but I hate the suggested settings they recommend. I don't ever use VIVID, I was just using that as an example.

vivid makes colors over saturated but a person can lower it thru color slider

while movie tends to washout the colors to make it blah

I have tried it on samsung and i can get the same quality in dynamic, standard

I think a lot of us have either professionally calibrated sets (not me) or have looked into what experts have set their sets at and emulated that with some modifications for our own preferences and space. I don't use any "picture mode"- it's all custom.

Have you checked the display settings forum for your TV?

It seems the other posters don't understand your question, but I do. Unfortunately, I don't have a definitive answer. I believe I have read that 'some' sets start with different "base" settings for each preset picture mode. By this, I mean, a 50% color for vivid is not the same as a 50% color for cinema or standard. The same goes for picture, sharpness, etc. Again, I'm not sure it is this way for all sets, but I know some are like this. You can test this by changing all of the settings on vivid and cinema to the same levels and then switching back and forth between them on a paused scene (if this is possible).

Typically, most custom settings start from the 'standard' picture mode, which is pretty much mid-point for the individual settings. In vivid/dynamic, these base settings are jacked way up and in cinema they are typically subdued for viewing in a darkened room.
