Default Movies that should STOP! at trilogies...or not?

Which movies, past present or future, do you think should(ve) stop(ped) when they reached a trilogy?

For example, would you like to see another Back to the Future (I wouldn't), Bourne movie, Spider-man, etc etc.? Are there any trilogies you want more of? Were you glad Die Hard continued on with a 4th movie? Indiana Jones? Happy the Star Wars prequels came out or would you rather Lucas just stuck to the original trilogy? Voice your thoughts below.

I want to see more Ocean's. I thought the Matrix should have just stay with the first movie. Bourne was good, just don't make no more...

in complete agreement. i thought bourne 1-3 were fantastic and a great trilogy. even if they bring back damon and greengrass, a 4th bourne just makes it seem uneven. i dont want the bournes to turn into bonds even though they could essentially just put him on a different "mission" in each movie and have like 20 of them.

I don't think Back to the Future should have made the trilogies should have stopped at two. Also Blade i think it should have just been left with the first one. Same with Hellboy. I think Rocky should have stopped at 4. I really can't think of a movie that i want a second or a third to come out of. Remember this is all IMO

i agree that blade definitely stopped after 1. The last two were pretty mediocre IMO. But i disagree with Hellboy. I think a trilogy would be nice. And i think Guillermo del Toro is very capable of making them all very good movies.

sequels tend to ruin movies especially part threes. Although I think the LOTR: Return of the King was the best of th LOTR Trilogy and a rare exception. And LOTR was a great trilogy but way too long, with that said though I am looking forward to the Hobbit but I think it will and should stop with the Hobbit(even though I never read the books).

Besides the LOTR ROTK, are there any part 3's or more that were as good as their prequels? I must admit that I actually liked Return of the Jedi more than A New Hope, and Revenge of the Sith more than Phantom Menace and Attack of the clones. Any others?

Also, if they ever make a Thundercats movie I think there is enough material there to make it a great trilogy but they shouldn't make more than 3.

Also with Hellboy. Since Del Toro is so busy the third would not be made until 2014ish

I LOVE the Pirates films and am sure the 4th will be great but i dont want it to come out... it ended just perfectly... spider man is kinda the same way, the 3rd was not as good as the first too and most had figured itd be a trilogy.

i think back to the future is a great trilogy, and while the 3rd imo is definitely the weakest it is by no means a bad movie. it was a solid conclusion to the 3 movies.

I agree...a great trilogy. I think that third is very good, but it was kind of hard to to top two. Two was just plain excellent! I also think Hellboy II was leaps and bounds better than the first, and I like the first a lot. A strong third would be a good way to end it before all of the actors get too old to pull it off. Hopefully it will happen and soon, but I'm not sure since it didn't do big numbers at the box office...respectable, but not big...just like the first one. This may have problems getting off of the ground like a third Narnia movie since greed seems to trump good movie making. Good profits just aren't enough for the movie studios. Every studio wants record setting blockbusters like the Pirates movies.

The Batman movies (from 1989 to 1997) -- They should've stopped after Batman Returns. The campiness of Batman Forever and Batman & Robin was just plain pathetic! (The phenomenal Batman Begins and the masterpiece that is The Dark Knight are exempt from this.)

Robocop -- Should've stopped after the second one!

The Bourne movies -- I'm actually looking forward to a 4th Bourne film! Bring it on, Universal!

The Friday the 13th movies (the ones owned by Paramount) -- Should've ended at "Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan". New Line should've never done the crappy duo of "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday" and "Jason X"!

The Transporter movies -- While I liked all 3 movies, the formula has run out of steam altogether. It's time for Jason Statham to move on from this.

The Godfather movies -- I agree with danjross. The third film shouldn't have been made. It's like the black sheep of the series. No wonder the third film didn't get the Coppola Restoration on the Blu-ray release!

The Mummy movies -- The third one would've been better if Rachel Weisz had returned to the role of Evelyn "Evie" O'Connell. Maria Bello was lost and out of place. In fact, after I saw Bello's performance in "Tomb of the Dragon Emperor", they should've just written the character of Evie out completely (i.e. Written the character out to say that she died a few years after the events of "The Mummy Returns"), and that way the movie would've been a father-and-son kind of adventure...with Evie's brother Jonathan in tow.

The Pirates of the Caribbean movies -- I'm excited for the 4th movie! Bring it on, Disney!

Not everything needs to be a trilogy. Most of the time, one or two should be enough. For example, Underworld. Just about half of the first movie is more than I'd ever want to watch.

yep, a lot of movies i like just have 1 sequel and sometimes a trilogy is would be unnecessary. but this thread is supposed to specifically be for movies that have at least 2 sequels already, not movies that people think should be turned into trilogies. EDIT: i guess based on my posed question i don't actually clarify that. whatever, i don't care about specifics i'm just curious to hear people's opinions.

The recent "resurrections" of old trilogies went very well I think. Die Hard, Rambo, and Rocky were good new versions. I think the key to it was that they spent long enough between the originals and the new ones that people were hungry for it. Bourne ended on a very good note and tied everything off, I haven't read the new books, so not sure how well they continue the character or if it goes completely off base. If they don't follow the books and use completely different source material they could easily ruin it.

Other trilogies, Back to the Future, it was good they stopped when they did and didn't run the franchise into the ground. Look at Police Academy, the newer ones were just mockeries of the original few. Over saturation of a franchise makes people less likely to want to see the originals because they get a bad taste of how much the newer ones sucked. Robocop probably should have been a single movie that never got made into a trilogy. You can tell they were trying to ride the wave of the first one, and each one after that just got worse.

I'm glad Stallone closed out Rocky the way he did. I think Rocky, Rocky 2, and Rocky Balboa make a pretty good trilogy on their own. I wish Indy 4 was better . . . I'm warming up to it, but when I first saw it I kind of wished they would have left it alone. Definitely glad for Rambo and Die Hard 4's.

I would have liked Constantine being a trilogy. The alternate ending would have left it open for something epic!

Most of the time a trilogy should stay a trilogy if the story is closed (i.e. Matrix) but if it's something like Diehard or Blade, where they can just have another mission, than keep doing it.

There is no doubt that some franchizes should have stopped while they were ahead. But if the studio contniues to see $$$$$ they won't hesitate to keep pooping them out. I guess in a round about way, when Saw 20 comes out, the people should look no further than the mirror when they want to ask someone why (except me because I only watched Saw III and that was enough to say "Never again!").

I think it can also be said that some sequels have been great, depending on perspective. While some people hated the last two Matrix movies, I absolutely adored them.

In that same arena I love Pirates 1 but I hate Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3. I did read rumors a while back about the possibility for a Pirates 4 that would star Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush searching together for the fountain of youth, without that whole dreadfully dramatic, boring love story between Elizabeth Swan and Will Turner. Now that might make for an interesting story so I might appreciate that sequel.

I guess it all boils down to perspective.
