Default HD-DVD US, Blu-ray International?

Ok, I notice that The Holiday’s distributor for the United States is Sony, which of course means it’s not on HD-DVD, only Blu-ray. However over in Australia, the distributor for The Holiday is Universal therefore it will be release in HD-DVD only.

Are there any movies that are only on HD-DVD in the US, but are on Blu-ray somewhere else in the world?

Only a few, but that list is growing. Click on the link in my Sig for the Import Guide, and go to the Universal page.

Hey Josh, are there any downsides to importing for people in the US? I was curious if the disc packaging or anything else might not be in English or if there were any other differences.

Thanks for the great guide.

This disc packaging will almost always be in the native language. The movie should contain the original language - so with US movies distributed overseas, this means English. If importing from Europe, you'll probably get the wider Blu-ray cases, if that bothers you. If you import movies made in countries outside the US, be sure that it contains English subtitles.

Besides those minor things, there is no downside. I own two imported movies, and love them both.

Thanks for the info. One additional question came to mind. Do imports use the same encodes as the domestic release or do the foreign distributors do their own? I have a real problem with Warner's encodes and this would be a plus if I could get some of their titles from distributors who do an encode optimized for BR's higher bit rate as well as a lossless audio track. On the flip side, I would hate to purchase an import from a distributor which does a mediocre ( Warner like ) transfer.

Heroes will be a HD-DVD only TV show here in the US. Does anyone know if it will be release on Blu-ray somewhere else? UK perhaps?

Its possible. In the UK, its distributed by BBC. Who knows if that pertains to video rights as well.
