Default Soldiers in Iraq Allowed Beer and Pizza for Super Bowl!

A BIG round of applause for General Odierno for not letting political correctness get in the way of allowing our fighting boys to enjoy a little normalcy during the super bowl. Way to go, General!

Quote:
For thousands of soldiers in Iraq come Super Bowl Sunday, when they're out of Schlitz, they really will be out of beer.

Earlier this month, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, Gen. Raymond Odierno, issued a waiver allowing military to drink beer on Feb. 1 -- a break from rules prohibiting alcohol that were established in light of occupying an Islamic country.

But soldiers will only be allowed two beers, max.

By that measure, Louis Glunz Beer Inc., a Lincolnwood Schlitz distributor, is sending enough free suds for 2,016 fighters.

"It won't be cold on our end but I'm sure it will be in the future,'' said Glunz general manager Jerry Glunz.

Three pallets of brew, along with 2,000 pizzas from Lou Malnati's Pizzeria, will be packed up Friday and flown to Iraq courtesy of delivery company DHL.

Glunz said Schlitz has a tradition of providing beer to soldiers -- part of the brand's post-World War II dominance was because of its distribution to the military, he said.

At the height of World War II, the company advertised that one out of every four bottles produced went to American fighters serving overseas.

Drinking will be limited to dining areas and commanders were ordered to keep a lid on the partying.

Alcohol isn't illegal in Iraq but is forbidden by the Quran. The Super Bowl falls during a holy period for Iraq's majority Shiite Muslims.

Too bad they're only allowed 2, thats barely a drop in the bucket for a real superbowl party. But still better than nothing

If you need more than 2 beers to have a good time, then you have bigger problems.

Why not cancel the rest of the war for the Super Bowl? If the war was over they could have as much pizza and beer as they wanted.

Nice. A bunch of non-fighting pouges will get to drink and watch the game while combat arms does the "military thing."

I hope supply and admin get this perk along with everything else they get being REMFs. I know they do their job so well that you will never see a grunt missing gear or holding a FUBAR LES.

(I hate when the guys in the rear get something to boost moral so a bunch of googly eyed civilians can clap like special ed about how good we treat our military.)

I hope your "googly-eyed civilians" comment wasn't directed at any of us here. I see nowhere in the article where it states only "certain" soldiers will be allowed to partake in the festivities. I'm also not so naive to think those on duty will be permitted to drink. Most of the replies on this thread show a strong support for our miltary. We're not the ones you need to be mocking.

I posted this more to applaud the fact that we actually said "to Hell with Islamic rules, we're Americans, and we're going to celebrate the Super Bowl with beer!".

No on this thread or forum. No worries.

I already read it somewhere else, and did not read the thread, so no one here is acting silly as far as i can see.

Just my opinion that the guys who miss out are the guys who deserve it the most. The guys who get it deserve it the least.

I am also in a little bit of a bad mood over some military related stuff that has to do with pouges and grunts.

Edit to say, FOR SURE not you for posting it. I agree that it is good that at least someone gets to have a little fun.

Isn't that how it is for a lot of things in life? Probably a lot more so in the military, though.

They deserve more than that! I feel for those dudes, fighting for an unjust cause. God bless them. They also should receive free healthcare and everyone gratitude.

LOL. And that would be what? Freeing the Iraqi people from a murdering dictator? Battling the Islamo-terrorists that flooded into Iraq from Syria, Iran, Afghanistan and elsewhere? Helping a country establish a democratic govenment? Oh, I get it, you must mean that we're fighting in order to line the pockets of the 'Big-Oil' executives that are all 'buddies' with W&C. It amazes me what kind of senseless drivel the sheep in this country (and elsewhere) believe.

I do commend you for supporting the troops, though.

I hate that some people confuse the two points that I am making, and I am glad that you understand what I am saying. These wars have been such a business and Bushie and his buds have made so much money in private contracts its disgusting. All the while I have complete respect and admiration for the people that are willing to risk their live for the greater good of our country.

Good news. I'm retired Navy and we would get 2 beers and have a bar-b-que on the flight deck if we spent too much time in the persian gulf/arabian sea without pulling into a port. 2 beers is a nice treat after 90 days, these guys in Iraq have been there ALOT longer in some cases.
