music on PS3

No there was a post about this long ago but could not found it. Someone has written that he's mp3's are played back as 5.1 PCM. Only got my PS3 a couple of weeks and have notice the following when I play a normal audio CD the blue
multi channel processing light on my Sony receiver stays on which means it is doing multi channel processing which is wrong as a CD is stereo, the CD play back right as only music is coming from front to speakers only. This multi channel light should be off when playing CD's. Would like to no if a solution has been found for this ?

Use HDMI cable to connect PS3 to receiver and HDMI cable to connect receiver to TV.

mp3's dont' play in 5.1.
double stereo maybe...

your solution may be assesed much better if you tell us what equipment you are running.

neither does CDA, but the PS3 send them to the receiver as 5.1. The multichannel decoding light on receiver only comes on when it recieves multichannel signal, so it is not suppose to be on when playing cd's or mp3's as both are 2 channel.

PS3 is connected to a Sony STR-DA3300ES receiver which is connected yo a Sony Bravia HD ready TV.

my ps3 is hooked up to my onkyo 605 receiver and they only way i can get all-channel stereo with my music is to only selct stereo as my audio output on my ps3 and change my receiver settings to all-ch

I answered this question earlier, when I had the same problem as you. It took me forever to find this answer in another forum, but when i found it, I posted this solution on Blu-ray.com.

Prankster you have the same receiver I have so just Press and hold the Enter button on ur receiver, for about 3 seconds. The display should then say Auto (Hdmi) press enter again then it should say PCM - Hdmi. That will give u the ability of modifying the listening modes, while u have an Hdmi setup for ur ps3.

This way u can take advantage of ur 5.1/7.1 set up when listening to any mp3/wav files on ur ps3 by using the alternative matrix codecs. Let me know if u have any questions, this solution is harder to explain on a computer then verbally, u know.

As for the OP, you have a Sony, so I'm afraid I don't have a solution for you, but take a good hard look at your user manual and see if you can find a solution. Or check other A/V forums via Google, that's what I did.

Never thought of it in this way, but my PS3 is not suppose to be able to play SACD's

lol why not? does your model not support it?

quite frankly it's the absolute best feature i value on my PS3.

they do some amazing surround mixes that will make anyone melt.
even non audio/music enthusiasts haev been appalled when they hear some SACDs

My CD's and MP3's play in stereo from my PS3. Not sure why yours don't unless your receiver settings are doing something (All-Channel Stereo for example)

The cd's and mp3's do play in stereo as the music only comes out left and right speakers, but the signal received by the receiver is not stereo it is multichannel if it was a stereo signal the multichannel light on receiver would not have came on. Got a Sony BD S-500 player that is connected the same way as the PS3 is connected to receiver and when playing CD's on it the multichannel light is off which means the receiver is getting a stereo signal but for some reason the PS3 changes stereo isgnal to a multichannel signal when playing cd's.

Note : I do not want to play my music in sourround mode, no how to do that. Problem is when playing a cd the multichannel light on receiver should be of as cd's are stereo not multichannel but it is on which means the PS3 is sending a multichannel signal to receiver instead of stereo which it is suppose to do.

Maybe the other channels are active, but there's nothing being sent to them.

Either way, it seems like there's no problem. You're getting Stereo audio like you're supposed to.

This is not a major crisis seeing that the music is played in stereo as it should be , it is just weird that the PS3 for some reason converts the 2 channel signal to a multicahnnel signal.

Frieda, PS3 does not convert your stereo audio files to multi-channel. More than likely this is your receiver incorrectly showing the multi-channel signal. Try changing the PS3 output from bitstream to PCM.
