Default Official PS3 Crackling Audio Thread

I have been reading about this all over the internet, and I am posting this to see if there are other people on this site who have encountered this problem and what they have done to remedy it. Basically, anytime I watch anything I get crackling of the audio on all three front channels anytime the dialog gets loud or with gun shots and explosions. From what I have been reading, this problem didn't start occuring until around update 2.43. Maybe, just maybe if enough people report this problem we can get a fix in a firmware update. If we don't, I will be buying a new Blu-ray player.

It sounds like your PS3's internal volume setting is turned up too high, producing clipping. What is your volume level set at?

I wish it were that simple. It is set at 0. Everything is set the way it should be. This happens with a bunch of movies now.

my thoughts exactly superman....

make sure the internal volume is at 'zero'. tons of obtrusive noises result from bumping it up to '2'. It's ok that the tv/AVR volume is higher as long as there are problems (such as those you are reporting)

Can you list the movies this occurs with? can't say I've experienced this yet

This is a well documented problem on many other AVR forums.

hmmm thats odd. I have never heard crackling of any kind when watching movies on my ps3!

Checked the connections on your receiver?

Tried a different HDMI cable?

well the only issue ive had with sounds similar were only on dts ma titles. some 'crackling' during the initial logos for the movie when you first put it in. and thats it. never during a movie so i find that odd. but not concerned enough to investigate. its not a lot of crackling or too loud. never had an issue with any other format or codec.
