Default Question about Dolby TrueHD

I have a Sony BDP-S350 Blu-ray player which has a Dolby TrueHD decoder built inside. My question is, when I'm looking for a receiver, does the receiver also have to have the Dolby TrueHD label on it? Or will any receiver allow me to enjoy a TrueHD track?

Thanks!

negative.

...some receivers with HDMI inputs do not process HDMI audio...these are "pass through" systems.

as per crackin...make sure the receiver you are looking at is not just pass thru.

As a general rule of thumb i would say look for a receiver that has the dolby true HD logo on it, however there are some out there that do not have this logo that will accept multi channel PCM.

Which receivers are you looking at? we will be able to guide you to the right choice for you and your requirements if you list which ones are peaking your interest

There's still a ton of HDMI pass-through receivers out on the market. How would someone looking for advice on them be able to tell what's newer and what's not?

"Pass-through" means that the audio is untouched- the HDMI just passes it on through to the HDTV. As a result, it's not going to give you lossless audio, as you'll have to use either optical or digital coaxial or other means to get audio.

There are still other options to get lossless (analog outs) but your player only has 2.0 analog outs, so that's not an option.

With Onkyo, the 604 and higher handle audio via HDMI. Make sure that the receiver that is included in any HTiB package is at least that high of a model #.

I guess if you look hard enough, you will find one. But the majority of today's receivers handles pcm via hdmi.
So to the op, look at the specs and get a receiver that has a "hdmi repeater" and not a hdmi "pass through". Because often you won't see a receiver stating that it will accept multichannel pcm via hdmi as a spec, take Onkyo for example.

just an fyi... i have the same bd player and it while it can decode dolby trueHD it cant decode dts-hd ma so i just pass the everything to my reciever it let it do the decoding... you may want to look into a reciever that can decode both if you are in the market for a new one
