Default Gangs of New York - Canadian Blu version

Does anyone know if the picture quality on the Canadian/Alliance import is better than the American/Disney version? I can't find a review anywhere.

I LOVE this movie but have heard nothing but bad things about the American transfer.

Thanks!

I've got the American version, and am very satisfied with the picture quality.

Maybe I am biased, but to me, this transfer isn't that bad. A bit of grain, but nothing more so than say 300 or other blus. I couldn't really notice it when watching the film either, only when I looked hard for it. By no means is the transfer pretty, however.

There are definitely problems with the transfer, but its still an upgrade over the DVD. There are several scenes with halos all over the place. The biggest problem I see with this Blu is that there are some scenes that look spectacular, but then there are scenes that look like crap. Some scenes have colors that pop vibrantly and others look horrible. The viewing experience is so uneven. I wouldn't expect a film like this to look as good as reference quality material simply because of how it was shot, but man...there are scenes that look as though they didn't even bother to touch. I'm talking DVD quality in some scenes.

There are a lot of scenes that weren't even cleaned up. You would think a movie made this recent would have a cleaner source, but there's definitely specs of dirt in some parts of the film. Edge enhancement was clearly used in this transfer too which of course resulted in the halos I mentioned earlier. The dreaded DNR also contributes to the uneven grain with some scenes being noisy and others having almost no grain. Of course the scenes with the least amount of grain also look extremely soft. And let's not talk about detail...whew! Shadow detail is almost non-existent.

With all of this said, it still looks a lot better than the DVD which in my opinion looks absolutely horrendous. Compare and you will never look at the DVD again. You may even be ready to burn it. Its just a huge disappointment that they didn't put more time into making this the definitive release that it could have been. I've seen much worse, but I must admit that this is a very weak release. If the DVD wasn't so bad it would not be worth the upgrade, but since it is THAT bad this is clearly the version to have.

Definitely mixed reviews on this title leads me to believe different people bought different versions, maybe even Canadians. I just bought this cheap $10 Alliance version (2008 packaging) and think it looks nice and film-like. The edges are a bit smooth but it looks "right" for an 1860 time period. I did notice the odd vertical bands on the left edge of the picture in some scenes but thought it was an effect of the lens used.

I wonder if the Alliance was different than the original US release seeing how lowly that was reviewed, and how highly the "remastered" version was reviewed.

BUT more importantly, I can't get the special features to play. I just get a black screen and no audio!! Can't even play the trailer, but sometimes can get two of the set design features to play???

The Canadian version is identical to the US release. Only difference is the french on the cover art. Don't expect a new transfer anytime soon.

That surprises me, cause Im curious as to see what the US release is like ... I ordered this cheap off inetvideo and the pq wasnt bad, it wasnt no pixar title but it wasnt bad and most of the time good, I dont recall any moments of like intense grain like "big fish" or "hoosiers"

I remember saying, "What the hell is all the fuss about" ... this is why I thought maybe they got a diff transfer or something. Im happy to have this one in my collection and the little bit of french is pretty discrete.

The american version, while I won't go as far as to say it sucked, was a disapointment...
