Default PS3 enhancements

I find the PS3 is full of surprises and its great to keep discovering new features, and when I do I get an increased feeling of satisfaction from my purchase.

Im not really a gamer, and this is my first console ever, I bought it to play some games and watch blu ray movies becasue it was the cheapest adn most available bluray player, however it has turned out that I mainly surf the web and watch videos (and bluray on it) rather than play games. I bought motorstorm which I think is awesome and Im waiting for a FPS game like crysis to arrive. (im a far cry fan from my Pc a few years ago)

My wish list of enhancements or suppliments to the PS3 after 3 months of usage are below, what do you think ?

Are there features Im not aware of that could over come these things ?

Content
======

1. Besides the PS3 store where else can I get quality HD material ?

2. I saw the preview for the new game called Crysis, Im assuming it will be made available on the PS3 however the trailers that are available in HD formats are not compatible with the PS3 !. Do you know a website to find PS3 compatible HD content like game trailers ?

3. Wider Codec support for DivX,Xvid,WMV, MOV and AVI files would be great.

Video Management
==============

1. The ability to create folders (and nested folders) to sort my video clips, similar to the way albums are stored in folders. (movie trailer folder, home video folder, game trailer folder etc ..)

2. Just like the slideshow feature for pictures or the shuffle feature to continuous music play, Id like to have a similar fetaure to shuffle playback of my video clips.

3. Expand the upscaling feature to include any video playback (ie video files stored on the PS3) and not just DVDs

4. Support for a file system like NTFS that allows larger than 4GB file

5. Again Wider Codec support for DivX,Xvid,WMV, MOV and AVI files.

6. How about a USB plug in HDTV tuner and the ability to record TV shows onto the PS3 HDD

Internet Browsing
=============
1. I find the browser sluggish to load a page, its not my internet connection because IE6 on my notebook works fine. Are there any settign to improve this, or is the browser just weak at the moment.

2. I think better support for the funky html, flash etc .. that some sites use so that navigation works better with PS3 controller (jump to next link)

3. Support for some additional plugins to allow display / reading a PDF file or video playback on some sites.

2. Faster loading of webpages, the browser seems to be too slow

3. Better page scrolling , scrolling a page like www.smh.com.au or news.com.au is painfull (try it out)

4. Ability to open up a bookmark in a new window

6. Remove the number of open windows limitation, from memory you can only open 6 or 8 browser windows. However I find my self having to do this due to the sluggish loading of pages.

Music
=====

1. Having album covers as icons would be neat, (like the folders storing photos)

GUI
===

1. Ability to set the background color, or a picture as your background

2. A system clock that can be displayed on the background or overlayed on screen

3. I havent tried the chat facility, but a cool feature would be if the PS3 would connect to my VOIP provider and allow me to use a bluetooth headset via the PS3 to my VOIP provider.

4. Or even be able to connect my sony ericsson phone to the PS3 by blue tooth and use it as a voip phone.

5. It would be cool if I could receive inbound calls too from my voip account via the PS3

Cheers

Crysis will not be on the PS3 unless SCEA buyouts Microsoft.

Just not going to happen.

Codec support is an uglier issue. Either have to wait for the codec developers to come up with a downloadable codec using the PS3 dev kits, or wait for Sony to acquire a global license.

For Filesystems, I suggest looking at Yellow Dog Linux, not that I use it myself, but it should be interesting .

You can get album cover art as icons. It's not an easy method, but you can attach them as icon to the files if you migrate the files from your PC to your PS3.

Rupmuk : thanks for the welcome, ive been lurking for a while, finally decided to post.

Reiella : Im dissappointed to hear Crysis wont come to the PS3, Is there anything similiar due for the PS3 ? Id love to get a kick ass FPS and I have held off getting call of duty and RFOM (i got the demo of that).

Asassins Creed looks good too, again there are no HD trailers that I can find that will playback on the PS3.

This leads me to another point , being able to download content on the web and save it to PS3, currently it forces you to save to external media !

eg: goto ubisoft.com dload the HD trailer, save to video and then playback on PS3 (also requires PS3 Codec support)

regarding Linux how does that work, load another operating system, can you then access the linux partition when booted in Ps3 mode ?

Mr Bodgey : see next post

cheers

Mr Bodgey : I have been to usent eg a.b.hdtv but i find everything encoded in divx or xvid or mkv files, i should not have to stuff around converting them to playback on the PS3.

Now I did pickup some .ts files of the latest sopranos (aussie TV stations is making us wait for the series finale, and i cant hold out)

But I had to merge the ts file and then convert it to mpg which was essentially a copy process via a program (hdtv to mpg). then I had the issue of 2 episodes being more than 4gb so i couldnt load it onto the ps3 had to burn it to dvd and play back as a datafile, its a cumbersome process and should be like that.

Which usenet groups do you recommend for content that would be PS3 compatible ? I have 60gb per month to burn. pvt msg me if you like.

Also how can one become a PS3 beta tester ?

cheers

While I'm also trying to figure out how to convert .MKV files to .MP4 files, I don't blame SCE for not including that container/codec in since essentially those are made for PCs and internet use. They have nothing to do with broadcast standards.

I consider the PS3 a steal at its current price (though Aussies and Europeans might disagree). Even more so now when it got upgraded as a DLNA device. I hope people don't expect too much codec add-ons like OGG, Divx or Xvid. It would be nice if the PS3 can correctly decode the 5.1 AC3 stream on .PS/.TS files. Apple should work on getting 5.1 AAC on MP4 files as well.

Ubisoft is making Haze which will be a PS3-exclusive FPS game and it will be exclusive to the console........until the end of the year.

hey where has my original post gone ??

even at $999 here in oz i find the PS3 a steal because the PS3 is equivalent to these things combined :

(aussie dollars)
bluray player $1000+
memory card reader $50
netgear network media player $300+
pc for internet browsing $600+

There is a rumor floating around that xVid support is in beta with a release before the end of the year. But that comes from anonymous people hinting at things so by no means should you have faith in it.

As far as getting high quality video....if you don't have metered or capped broadband access...there are ways. Getting broadcast HD from Usenet is ridiculously simple.
