Standard vs. Movie Mode? - Blu-ray Forum

Hello everyone,

New member here. I've got a Samsung LN46A530, PS3 and a Samsung HT TWZ312 home theatre system (not the greatest theatre system but came as a package deal with the tv so no complaints). I've got the PS3 hooked up directly to the tv via HDMI and the home theatre via component (no hdmi output).

I'm just trying to figure out the difference between the different modes (standard, movie, dynamic). I've seen various suggested callibration settings but some offer ones for only standard while others only movie (never really both).

So, the question is what is the difference? Is one a mode that is good for standard tv, HD TV, blu-ray/PS3? Or do I need to keep switching the modes from standard (for regular tv viewing) and movie (for ps3/blu-ray viewing)?

Also, what if I'm watching sports? Do I need to change the settings for 'sports' too?

There are soooo many options it's hard to figure out how to best enjoy my tv when viewing different things (sports, movies, regular tv).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

what you want to do is calibrate one of them (any) with custom settings using a calibration disc..... The "Movie" "Standard" "Dynamic" etc... are just defaults..... for instance "Dynamic" may bump up contrast etc.... but once you adjust all of the levels yourself..... you'll have a setting that will more accurately reproduce the images, and in my opinion, should be used for all viewing.

Depending on the OP's TV, he might get different results using the different modes. With my TV (Samsung FP-T5084) I wrote down all my settings and tried them with the different modes (dynamic, standard, movie) and they DO NOT look the same, even with the same settings. Therefore, one mode may calibrate more accurately than the others.

Also dynamic mode is the brightest of the 3 modes , which I think is not the best thing for the display !!

I use "movie mode" on my Samsung dlp. It is the closest to 6500k for accuracy. You can make adjustment from there and save as a custom setting. I use this for all viewing.

I keep mine on movie mode as well. IMO, I think you'll find that a majority do this as well with their Sammy's settings.

Definitely, with movie mode being the dimmest.

Thanks guys. That definitely helps a lot (esp. that most sammy users use movie mode).

Another question - does anyone adjust the settings to accommodate for a fast paced action movie or when watching sports? Or does the main settings fit all (esp. the fast moving type of shows).

Once you have it set for the best picture (calibrated) , Leave it be ! The PQ will be the same weather it is moving fast or slow !!
I have A 120hz & for Blu-ray's & stock car races I have the 120hz on high . For regular tv I have it off !!!
