I searched but I couldn't find a definite answer...
Now I've read about the grain in the BD playback on the PS3. I see it even on my Pirates BDs (which kinda ruins it). My question is, is this problem unavoidable? Can it be fixed? Specs: Player: Playstation 3 (Settings on 1080i/connected via HDMI) TV: Samsung HL-S4266W (720p Native/1080i) |

Grain is inherent to film. It's not a BD or PS3 issue.

I don't know how you saw grain in pirates. I watched them both multiple times on my ps3 and havent even noticed the slightest amount of grain even in all the nighttime shots of the film. I was looking very hard to notice any problems too.

One more question: My 720p Native TV can do 1080i. At 42", what resolution would be better? I know the difference between the two but I guess the question is more, would I notice any difference on a 42" screen? |

Well with update 1.8 you can run directly in 720p, so try it and see what works best for you. btw Sony BDs (and the T2) have a test pattern which you can use to set the sharpness control more or less flat (not peaking) because having the sharpness going overboard brings the grain up at the same time that the extra edge sharpness is actually degrading the image and making it lose its high definition.

Complaining about grain in a movie shot on standard film is like complaining about how your car revs up when you hit the gas. It's supposed to be there.
Are you sure you're seeing grain and not confusing artifacts or some defect in the picture caused by bad settings? Because the film is pretty much master quality. |

For a while I thought I was seeing grain in my BDs but as it turns out I believe I am seeing defects in the picture caused by my $500 HDTV. I saw a Samsung HDTV priced at $3000 and it looked noticably better than my set. I'll post a pic soon to show what I'm seeing.

Here's one pic I took of the NIN:Beside You in Time disc and how it looks on my TV. As you can see here, (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/nine...youintime.html) Peter Bracke gave it a 5 out of 5 star rating for PQ.

I have the same problem but people on here have told me that if might be my TV and not the PS3. I have a Samsung 61" 1080 DLP TV model
HL-S6167W and its connected to my ps3 via HDMI. They also suggested that I might be sitting too close. Apocalypto is supposed to look spectacular but it had noticable "grain" which IMO made it look bad. This is the case with most of my blu-rays too. Maybe it is our TVs. |

I'm highlighting the banding that's going on in the circle and other parts of the frame. And I understand the band is behind a screen. I can take other shots from after they lift the screen and show to prove my point. |
