My list is of user input, not just taken from lists compiled off of statistics...and i take care of this list personally :END EDIT:

I am trying to compile a list of bluray movies that will completely fill up my 55" wide screen plasma. As it being already wide screen and 55 inches of display, getting a movie that is additionally a wide screen display made movies look fat and stubby with the only positive side being one would see ALL of the scene.I have no zoom or pan/scan feature on the TV so I can't simply "just make it fit." Unlike most people out there, I believe that a High-Definition movie really shows off, and looks amazing, on full screen.(Like when I saw movies on HBOHD which blew me away and got me excited about playing HD movies even though those were 720p) That is the whole reason why I bought a PS3; to use primarily as a Blu-Ray player then for games (cheapest High Definition player at the time). Imagine my dissapointment when I rent/buy and find out that most Blu-Ray's are in OAR or some kind of aspect ratio that do not go full screen.

The purpose of this thread is to ask you, the members, to please post up and input movies you know for certain are 16:9 full screen no black bars display as well as to also try and help those who might prefer my preferences.

I've tried and searched around, but there exists no specific lists that I could find and it would be endless to go through every single BR movie and check the aspect ratio (a lot of times amazon and other movie sites wouldn't even list the aspect ratio) or their information would be wrong. (post edit: This specific pre-requisite will set my list apart from any other list [especially those generated by a search and list parameter] and is the sole reason this list is unique and a bit more up to scrutiny.)

I've already gone and put up a similar thread on ps3forums.com blu ray movies section so I've gotten a small list going but I'm not getting much response there anymore so I'd like to try it here.

So far, I've only put movies on this list that specifically have 1.78:1 aspect ratio on amazon or imdb. I would put movies that list as 1.85:1 and such but, for some reason (maybe wrong aspect ratio information on the site which is why I'm trying to make this list), when I view them, I still receive the black bars (like Italian Job).({[I do not believe this anymore and am actually including it now]}) So if you've seen a movie on the list that is actually not full screen on an HDTV, than please let me know and I will take it down.

So here's how the new list will work...I went and filtered through his whole list with movies that weren't already on the existing list. Unfortunately, it's so big that I might've double posted and although I trust ruvic2007's list, I can't be concretely certain that his list really displays in full screen on a 16x9 display.

First of all, Welcome to the forum.

The only Blu Ray that i own and know is full screen is Hellboy, real good picture to show off too. I own quite a few DVDs so i'm gonna scan the boxes and will update this post with movies that will be full screen on Blu Ray. Superman Returns isn't a full screen movie by the way

My gf told me that the reason many Sony movies are releasing in Asia the same day as in the West (effectively allowing us to see them sooner here in Asia) is because many Sony movies are shot digitally. By doing this, they remove the middle-man of having to make film copies for each theater. They can quickly and easily get the movie into multiple theaters. She says this is giving Sony an edge over here, and is influencing the local Asian movie-makers to shoot on digital film. Having the movie on a digital theater format allows theaters to add more screens quickly, if the movie is a hit. In "opening day" fights between local movies and Hollywood movies, this is a big advantage, and can decide which film gets more screens and more money-making potential.... so Asian studios are starting to go with digital film, instead of the traditional route.

I thought I heard somewhere that this also makes transfer to BR much easier, cleaner, and it can also be made to fill up the screen more easily because it's shot that way sometimes.

I'm no film expert, but she was telling me all about what she'd heard on the news... this is what I remember.

Thanks for the greeting NARMAK and the info. Stupid amazon...it clearly says that superman returns blu-ray is aspect ratio 1.78:1. This is what I meant in my first post, that even if I could individually find aspect ratios for all blu ray movies, a lot of times they are incorrect information or does not necessarily mean that they will fill up the screen. In addition, Hellboy is a good movie to show off so I might just buy that movie so thanks again!

I have to agree. I have been a fan of letterboxing for over 20 years; when I was a teenager working in a video store I used to use a folded piece of paper to demonstrate to people how letterboxing shows you the whole image, etc. I used to special order VHS in letterbox editions when available, and of course was a huge laserdisc consumer. I love letterboxing when we needed it.

However, at this point - I'm just tired of it. I have this big widescreen TV, and I'm still looking at letterboxing lines. Each new movie seems to come out wider and wider (2.4 is just ridiculous for most films). I'm finding myself enjoying things like LOST much more on Blu-Ray than I am watching movies because it finally fills the whole frickin' screen.

Thanks - I feel better now that I know I am not the only one. Been watching black bars for 20 years - and finally getting just a bit tired of it.

You are welcome! And yes, although we are few and are barrated sometimes about "director's vision" and "proper OAR," you are not alone. It is interesting, your past with letterboxing, and I do agree, before widescreen tvs and 16:9, letterboxing was better. All the way up to DVDs, I would prefer "widescreen editions." But with the new(not so new anymore) technology of widescreens, I thought it was its purpose to break out of the mold of 4:3 displays and properly display a movie widescreen but also fullscreen. And I also agree with the "wider and wider." Sometimes it can really look (on a widescreen tv) that the image is short, wide, and stubby even though it shows the intended shot simply because the display is 50", 55", or 60+". It may not be so apparent with smaller displays (widescreen displays), but as the display gets bigger, it also gets wider.

In any case, thank you for the support and the appreciation. It is for you and those like you(us) that this list is for (also to those who just want refrences or information). Thanks again.

I've already gone and put up a similar thread on ps3forums.com blu ray movies section so I've gotten a small list going but I'm not getting much response there anymore so I'd like to try it here.

So far, I've only put movies on this list that specifically have 1.78:1 aspect ratio on amazon or imdb. I would put movies that list as 1.85:1 and such but, for some reason (maybe wrong aspect ratio information on the site which is why I'm trying to make this list), when I view them, I still receive the black bars (like Italian Job). So if you've seen a movie on the list that is actually not full screen on an HDTV, than please let me know and I will take it down.

99.99% of movies filmed before about the mid fifties will have black bars at the sides.

Any film done in CinemaScope or Panavision or 70mm or Technirama will have black bars above and below. Most Super-35 films (most are made for 2.39 presentation) will have bars above and below also.

What I do is check Leonard Maltin's guide and see if the post mid fifties film says "CinemaScope" or "Super-35" etc. If it doesn't it probably will be "full screen" on a 16:9

You can of course check specs or imdb or other sources too.

I believe you can add S.W.A.T. to the list. While watching a blu-ray, it showed a preview of S.W.A.T. and it filled the screen. Is that evidence enough?

Not really. Previews can be from a 1.85 trailer/transfer. (Shown before an 1.85 movie on a theater).
