Surely an indication that there’s a shortage of writers around at the moment, Universal have hired the co-writer of “Pooh’s Hefalump Movie” to pen the, um, “Wanted” sequel. (Derek Haas and Michael Brandt wrote the first film, but a quick check on IMDB shows that they’re pretty much knee-deep in work at the moment – “Beverly Hills Cop 4”, “The Matarese Circle”, “All Creatures Great and Small”, “The A-Team”, “The Thirteenth Hour”, “Deceit” and “Spy Hunter” – which is apparently gearing up again – all on their ‘to do’ list – so likely passed on the project, or were informed by Uni that they wouldn’t be waiting for a gap to open up in their schedule).

Aside from the animated “Winnie the Pooh” flick, Evan Spiliotopoulos wrote two “Tinkerbell” films for Disney, an animated “Nutty Professor” film (with Jerry Lewis returning to voice the Professor), and the Lionsgate toon-pic “Battle for Tera”.

Universal would’ve met Spiliotopoulous when he sold a supernatural thriller he wrote, titled The Last Call, to them.

Based on a story by Chris Morgan, ‘’Wanted 2’’ will be directed by original helmer Timur Bekmambetov. No word on the cast yet – but it’s likely they’ll be pushing to get James McAvoy back.

Unlike Max Payne the first movie actually delivered on awesome violence and a good story.

UPDATE: Yeah, we thought Mark Millar might have been a little bit overly-exuberant about the start date for shooting the sequel to Timur Bekmambetov's 2008 hit movie based on his graphic novel Wanted. ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! spoke with Bekmambetov himself this morning and told him what Millar told us and he suggested Millar might have said that to be "provocative" and it's more likely that they'll be starting preproduction in 8 weeks. Considering how long preproduction and planning can take on a movie like that, they probably won't be shooting until later in the year.

While talking to Mark Millar for Kick-Ass he revealed to us that the script for Wanted 2 is complete and that they're going to start shooting in eight weeks time.

Timur Bekmambetov is returning to direct while James McAvoy will again play Wesley Gibson.

Millar told us the sequel will revolve around the international group of assassins from issues 4 and 5 from Millar's graphic novel.

The first film, made for $75 million, earned $341.4 million worldwide in theaters.

DIRECTOR TALKS ABOUT RESURRECTING ANGELINA JOLIE'S CHARACTER

Knew it that she will be back.

So we recently reported on the rumor that Angelina Jolie is returning for Wanted 2, even though her character, Fox, [SPOILER ALERT!]

[Show spoiler]was on the receiving end of a bullet to the head at the end of Wanted

. Naturally, being the masters of deduction that we are here at Screen Rant we asked the question “How can they pull off resurrecting Fox without completely jumping the shark???”

Well, Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov recently let MTV Splash Page know exactly how he plans to do just that. Take a look at what he had to say and judge for yourself where it falls on your “shark jumping” meter.

“If you remember from the first film, we have a recovery room with the baths of wax…But there has to be a reason for her to come back… and we know the reason…”

Head over to MTV News for the full quotes, but I’ll tell you now: Bekmambetov never cops to what this grand logic for the character’s return actually is. Oh the suspense! Seriously though, if he were to give any answer OTHER than “The reason is we want to hold onto our biggest movie star so a bunch of people actually come see this thing,” I doubt I would believe him (way too cynical).

I said it before, I’ll say it again: this is a ploy, we all know it’s a ploy, and damn you, Hollywood, damn you. I already think Wanted was an overrated comic book; the movie was an underwhelming film; and this sequel is going to likely be like seeing a paled copy of a pale copy of a mute-color original.

However, everybody (contracted to be) involved with Wanted 2 should be on their knees right now, making offerings to the gods in the hopes that Jolie does return to this franchise. If not for her gracing the screen, is there really any firepower left in the Wanted gun?

At the end of the interview with MTV Bekmambetov again asserts that Wanted 2 will start filming by the end of the year. We’ll let you know what develops from that claim as it does.

ANGIE IS CONSIDERING WANTED 2

Last time I wrote about Wanted 2, it was to talk about the fact that Fox, Angelina Jolie’s character from the original film, might return. At that point, many things pointed to the liklihood of that actually happening being pretty low. But a couple of days ago I missed a piece on MTV (because I’m no longer used to them posting anything that isn’t Twilight-related) in which director Timur Bekmambetov talks about having cracked an idea to feature Fox once more. Now Anne Thompson says that Jolie is reading the current script, with hopeful Universal execs waiting for her thumbs-up.

At some point, we’ll have to agree that the spoiler window has closed for Wanted, but I’ll play along for now and warn you that there are some of those after the break.

So: Jolie’s character bit it in the first movie, and

[Show spoiler]at the time she said that it was likely a permanent death. (Fox dying was actually Jolie’s idea.) But she was responsible for a lot of the first movie’s business

, so it’s no surprise that Universal wants her back. With Jolie, Wanted 2 is a tentpole. Without her, it’s just another sequel. On the prospect of bringing the character back, Bekmambetov tells MTV:

But as Thompson notes, bringing Jolie back won’t be cheap. Wanted did surprisingly well, but if she asks for more for the sequel, will Universal pony up? And is the idea to bring Fox back really going to look like anything but a cheap Marvel Comics-style cop out of a legitimate character death?

Back in June we learned that "Wanted" director Timur Bekmambetov wanted Angelina Jolie to return for the sequel and that he already had ideas for how he would bring her back.

SPOILERS AHEAD:

[Show spoiler]Jolie's character died at the end of the first film, but Bekmembetov will resurrect her using the healing baths which the characters took to repair themselves after so much gun-toting mayhem. But will Jolie be interested in reprising her role?

According to Thompson on Hollywood, Universal Pictures has already sent Jolie the script and are now waiting for her to finish reading it and to get back to them with an answer.

The site added that Jolie will likely want to paid more than $15 million , which she got for the first film. Universal will likely agree since "Wanted" earned $340 million on a $75 million budget.

'Wanted 2' Director On Angelina Jolie: 'We Found The Reason For Her To Come Back'

"Wanted" director Timur Bekmambetov has made no secret of his desire to bring Angelina Jolie back for the sequel to last year's hit film based loosely on the comic book series by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones. However, her character's final scene in the film made such a return unlikely—if not impossible.

While Jolie previously told MTV News she didn't think her character, Fox, would be making a comeback for "Wanted 2," it's worth noting that this is still the world of comic books—and as all fans know, no character stays away very long in comics. In fact, when we spoke to Bekmambetov recently, he not only reiterated his plans to bring Jolie's character back, but he said they already have a plan for how it's going to happen.

The filmmaker said the story behind her return from the dead still trumps all other elements, but "we are trying hard."

"She was kind of... dead," he laughed.

While Jolie's return still isn't set in stone, Bekmambetov did offer up a timeline of sorts for filming to begin, saying, "I think we will make the movie this winter."
