Talking Ron Perlman Is Bubba Nosferatu!

Bloody-Disgusting reporter Jeff Otto just got off the phone with Ron Perlman, who was on hand to talk about his forthcoming alien battle in Mutant Chronicles. During the conversation, Jeff turned the subject to Bubba Nosferatu, the long-delayed and highly-anticipated sequel to Bubba Ho-tep that has been in the works for years now. The news is good, very, very good. You can read what Perlman had to say beyond the break.

The long-delayed BUBBA HO-TEP sequel BUBBA NOSFERATU is finally nearing a production start date. Don Coscarelli returns to write and direct again. Unfortunately, Bruce Campbell has decided to pass on the second go-round, but it's hard not to like his replacement, Ron Perlman. Also the addition of Paul Giamatti as Elvis’ shady manager Col. Tom Parker makes the project particularly intriguing.

Bloody-Disgusting spoke to Perlman earlier today and the actor confirmed that the wheels are in motion to get NOSFERATU off the ground this year. “I’m hearing that its looking really, really good that we’ll shoot it the minute I get done with SONS OF ANARCHY, which is early October,” Perlman told BD.

The plot is “under wraps,” according to Perlman, but the actor did say that the story is a good one and very much in line with the first film. “As sequels go, it won’t disappoint,” says Perlman. “If you liked the first one, I think you’re going to really dig the new take.”

Although the casting of Perlman as the King of Rock n’ Roll may seem a bit odd, its probably no odder than the casting of Bruce Campbell when we first heard it. “I loved the original,” says Perlman. “I was really surprised to hear that Bruce Campbell did not want to reprise the role. So we have his blessing. I know Bruce and I would never want to go in and replace him unless he said, ‘Hey man, I don’t want to do this one again, but good luck with it.’ So I loved the original. I love the fact that this one has Paul Giamatti in it, who I am a huge, huge fan of. And its a cool script.”

Perlman says it was his love of the original movie that drew him to NOSFERATU rather than any particular desire to play out a lifelong Elvis fantasy. “I was never an Elvis freak,” admits Perlman. “The frenzy that he whipped the world into, I did not become a part of. I admire him and I think he was a really compelling figure, but his music wasn’t the kind I was listening to as a kid growing up. I was a jazz guy. Elvis for me was more of an acquired taste, but I think he was an amazingly talented guy who had a very tragic life because he was such a slave to what the world wanted from him. In that regard, he really touches me.”

So is Perlman practicing his hip-swivel in front of the mirror? “I’m hoping that it kind of just washes over me when I put on the white jumpsuit.”

Yeah I generally have the same feelings towards Pig Vomit, but I am a big Perlman fan, I grew up watching Beauty and the Beast with my grandma. And even though the show sucked he ruled under all those prostetics and makeup.

I'm not saying I won't rent it on video, but I likely won't end up owning it like I did with Bubba Ho Tep.

And I too loved Beauty and the Beast, Pearlman is the man, but having Giamati in it makes me not want to see it in theaters, he's less than half as funny as his worst critic makes him out to be.

I really loathed him as Harvey Pekar, is there a more obnoxious character in history based on a very obnoxious real life person? I don't own Bubba HoTep and I only saw it once but it was very much out there, lol.

Coscarelli and Perlman Eyeing Fall Shoot For Bubba Nosferatu, Angus Scrimm Joining Cast

Quote:
Speaking to Fangoria Radio, Ron Perlman has given an update on the status of Bubba Nosferatu, the vampiretastic follow-on from Don Coscarelli’s Elvis vs. the Mummy gem, Bubba Ho-Tep. Apparently he will have a window into which the shoot may be squeezed, coming right up he wraps the current season of Sons of Anarchy in September. Having spoken to Coscarelli and co-star Paul Giamatti, Perlman seemed confident that they could all work it out in time and get cameras rolling.

Fangoria also let slip the casting of Angus Scrimm as “a Boris Karloff-like horror star who Elvis meets up with in Las Vegas on the set of a vampire movie.” This would be Claude Killgore, who we meet during the flashbacks to the 70s that make up half of the film and, knowing Coscarelli, I already pictured Scrimm in the role when I was reading the screenplay. It’s not a huge role, but it is a fun one and he will get to face off against Perlman as Elvis as ‘Clay Burton’ in the film-within-the-film.

I’m quite torn about the replacement of Bruce Campbell’s Elvis with Ron Perlman. I think they’re both great but… well, it disrupts the ‘completeness’ of the series, for one thing. All the same, now I know that Perlman’s got the gig, I’ve adjusted and I’m keen to see what he does with it. He’s not yet really started preparing, however:

I try to do things one at a time, not to get ahead of myself too much, but I’m sure when the moment arrives, I’ll have plenty of time to immerse myself in the King. He’s a character that I’ve been living with my entire life.

There’s a little tease about a potential third Bubba flick at the end of the second script, and I really wouldn’t want to spoil it for you. So, without the pay off, here’s the setup: Elvis is asked “First mummies, now vampires. I got to keep a close eye on you. What’s next, Elvis, The Wolfman?”

Again, without spoiling anything, the most important word in that quote is Elvis, but I guess you’ll want to wait for the film to find out why.

Can Pearlman even pull off an Elvis? Bruce is arrogant and suave enough to do it. Not sure about Ron.

Bubba Ho-Tep is one of my favorite movies. Would have been great to have Bruce back for another.
