Universal's Classic Monster Universe Takes Shape With 'Fargo' and 'Prisoners' Writers

Noah Hawley, the creator of the Fargo television series, Aaron Guzikowski, the scribe behind the gritty Hugh Jackman-Jake Gyllenhaal movie Prisoners, and Ed Solomon, the veteran screenwriter behind Men in Black and Now You See Me, have joined Chris Morgan and Alex Kurtzman to act as a writers collective of Universal Studios' cinematic monster universe.

The plan is for these "Monster Men" to act akin to Pixar's brain trust, or more aptly, like a well-oiled television writer's room, where all will have a hand in each other's movies and offer help as needed as they work on a model of serialized storytelling.

As part of the move, Guzikowski will take the lead writing The Wolfman, a new take on the classic werewolf tale that will hopefully re-launch a franchise and also weave in with the movies of the other monster characters. Hawley and Solomon have yet to take point on projects as the plan is still unfolding.
Morgan and Kurtzman, notable scribes in their own right, are producing the monster movies.

The Mummy will be the first movie out of the monster universe gate, with Kurtzman behind the camera and a June 24, 2015 release date. Other planned movies revolve around the characters of Dracula, Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein and vampire hunter Van Helsing.

It’s not clear what the order for the movies will be nor what stages of development the projects are in, although Universal has staked out Friday, April 21, 2017, for its second monster franchise film.

Wolfman is one of the studio’s legacy characters. His first screen appearance was in 1941’s The Wolf Man, directed by George Waggner with Lon Chaney Jr. as the man who is cursed to howl at the full moon and Claude Rains as his father.

Several lesser movies followed. The character made a splashy return in 2010 with Benicio Del Toro in the title role, Emily Blunt his love interest and Anthony Hopkins as his father. The pricey picture was plagued with production problems and whined its way to only a $61 million domestic tally.

Plot details for the revamp are being kept locked in a kennel.

Guzikowski also wrote Contraband, the hit action movie starring Mark Wahlberg that Universal distributed. He is in production of season two of his Sundance channel show The Red Road, which he created and that stars Jason Momoa.
He is repped by Verve, Madhouse Entertainment and McKuin Frankel.

Based on how goofy the original Invisible Man was and how Johnny Depp acts goofy in a lot of his big blockbusters, I fear this is going to be a recipe for an irritating movie-going experience.

Johnny Depp To Star In ‘The Invisible Man’ At Universal

EXCLUSIVE: Johnny Depp has been set to star in The Invisible Man for Universal Pictures, part of the studio’s new production initiative to reestablish the classic movie monsters that is a cornerstone legacy for the studio. That effort is being led by Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan, who’ll produce.

Universal’s first foray into the character was a 1933 adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel that starred Claude Rains as a scientist who finds a way to become invisible. The price is his sanity. The film was directed by James Whale, the immortal who also helmed Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, and it was produced by Carl Laemmle Jr, whose name, I’m pretty sure, is emblazoned on a building on the Universal lot. I could not get details on who is writing the script, or what the timing is on this picture. Kurtzman and Morgan have been hashing out the monsters universe in a writers room, but you cannot argue with the studio’s wisdom in putting those classic franchises on the slab and reanimating them.

This has been a big priority for Donna Langley, who has gotten going on two movies so far. They’ve managed a feat that Marvel Studios might envy: With Depp, they’ve now landed two of the biggest global stars in the world, after Tom Cruise was set to star in The Mummy, which Kurtzman will direct for a June 9, 2017, release. The Invisible Man character is an intriguing choice with depth and franchise potential for Depp, who’s coming off a lauded performance as Whitey Bulger in Black Mass and next will star in his other major franchises Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, coming in May, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Executive Vice President Jon Mone and Vice President Jay Polidoro will oversee production on behalf of Universal. Depp is represented by UTA and Bloom Hergott.

That Dracula Untold ending makes more sense now. Studio fingerprints all over that movie, it could've been great.

That's not part of this. They tried but it didn't work for them. The first film will be Tom Cruise's The Mummy.

Why do we need any movie ever? We don't. But you can do multiple versions of things and still have them be good. Did we need more than one Maltese Falcon movie? Probably not. But most of us remember the third film adaptation of it. No reason you can't enjoy and separate the two. Hell, I love the original, as well as the Chevy Chase version.

I am willing to watch it and might like it like the other films he did that many didn't the past years.

Don't forget the TV versions as well. My personal favorite was the then SciFi series which I am still waiting for the 2nd & 3rd seasons on DVD.

If this is the case then does it mean that they have to reintroduce ANOTHER Dracula to be part of this shared universe? Or is the shared universe thing not happening and they're just doing solo movies?
