How could you even put 2001 in the same category as the other two?

Best? 2001: A Space Odyssey (regardless of how god-awful slow and nutty it is)
Favorite? Gravity (regardless of how "overrated" people say it is) But Interstellar is still awesome in its own right (regardless of how many plot holes people love to point out in it) Out of the three, Gravity feels like the odd one out to me. This should really be a poll that compares all the space operas: Interstellar, 2001, the two versions of Solaris, Sunshine, and Silent Running...and anything else I missed. They all have their moments. |

In ranking order:
They're all pretty much on the same level for me, I think 2001 has the better mix of spectacle and cerebral. Interstellar has more emotion, while Gravity is far more compact, it's moments of reflection and ideas come separate from the big action scenes and they never quite gel together, despite it being the most impressive out of the three when you take 2001's age out of the equation. |

2001 by far. Not just a great space movie, but one of the finest motion pictures ever made.
I'd rank Gravity ahead of Interstellar. The former has its share of flaws, but it's still a very well made and entertaining drama. The latter is technically well done, but the story was just a mess thanks to a weak script. |

2001 doesn't really compare to modern "space" movies - this is not to say Gravity or Interstellar aren't good: I enjoyed both movies immensely. Also, Gravity is like a short, exhilarating theme park ride, Interstellar is more of a slow burn, thought provoking film, so even those two aren't that alike.

It's a historical drama, while the other three films are speculative fiction. Both Interstellar and Gravity owe a great debt to 2001, while Apollo 13 doesn't. However if there was an "accident in space" face-off, there could be a poll pitting Apollo 13, Gravity and Marooned against each other.

No need for /sarcasm, it certainly would have a place when comparing the most popular and influential science fiction films. 2001 and Star Wars always turn up in a top 10 of greatest science fiction classics of all time.
