Default Is you PS3 your best CD Player?

Hi,

I own the 60Gb PS3 and also a Sony NC-650V DVD, CD, SACD player.

Testing the 2 players with 2 copies of the same CD I noticed the PS3 as the better player. (The PS3 was hooked up via HDMI and used the mode 3 processing while the other player was testing using its optical and also analog outputs.)

If you have a CD player in your rack ... how does it compare to the PS3 for CD Audio?

Well, my favorite CD, SACD, DVD-A, and DVD-V players come from Oppo Digital. The DV-980H is my favorite SACD player in that it will output the original DSD bitstream to my receiver. The DV-983H is my favorite DVD-V player in that it has what is arguably the best de-interlacing and upscaling available at any price.

My PS3s are pretty good with CDs, SACDs (not the 40GB model), and DVD-Vs. They won't play DVD-As at all, and they insist on converting the DSD bits on SACDs to PCM before sending over the HDMI connection (which is ok, but not optimum in my opinion). Also, from what I've read (haven't done a direct comparison myself, so take this for what it's worth) that the DV-983H is noticeably better at upconverting DVDs to 1080p.

Oh, and the DV-980H is only $169. It isn't so good for DVD-Vs (it's upscaling of video isn't that great), but if you want a CD, SACD, & DVD-A player and have a receiver that can accept HDMI audio, the DV-980H is hard to beat.

It's my only cd player. I have all my music on my ipod, and I have the 7 dollar cord that lets me play it through my home stereo. I also have it where I can plug it into my car stereo.

What's a CD?

Ohhhh you mean those little discs. Yeah. Well I ripped every one I own into my PS3, so I don't need CDs any more. The PS3 rules!

Yeah, type 3, bitstreamed (until I get an HDMI receiver). Sounds great.

Plus, does your other CD player have visualizations on the screen for the music while it plays?

Plus, right now my PS3 has close to 100 gigs of music on it - my CD doesn't hold quite that much.

I much prefer my PS3.

Hey,

I have a lot of music on my PS3 hard drive too but I still have the stock 60Gb hard drive and have the music as MP3. I guess I may grab something like a 500GB drive or something eventually and then rip lossless wav files from the CD's. One problem with that though compared to just playing the CD is with just putting in the CD I don't have to run the projector. If I had a PSP (which could happen someday) then I could use the PSP to browse and play the music on the PS3 but I'm not there yet.

My best CD player is my Denon. I will never play MP3s as the quality just sucks. I bought very good equipment for a reason. Playing MP3's is not one of them. So sad that people now settle for massively compressed music. I find it funny that these same people then ***** about compressed sound on their blu ray disks, classic.....

It's my only CD Player! Hell if it grilled food, I would use it for that too!

DO you really need to see something on the screen while listening to music seems like a real waste of electricity to me.

This is exactly what I have set up -- CDs ripped to WAV on an external HDD and (since the update to Remote Play) PSP for navigation whilst the audio goes to the speakers. Several months back we lobbied Sony (via Paid) to let us use the PSP as a remote in this way and they listened and implemented the feature! I'm delighted.

Re: the original post. I think PS3 does a great job with CDs. My main audio player is a Toshiba (gack!) SD-6980, a dual-format SACD and DVD-A player, which I have outputting direct to analogue. But for whatever reason CD audio seems to sound better from the PS3 with digital output to amp/receiver, so for WAV I use that.

Also with PS3 you can use the upsampling feature.

PS3 isn't my best SACD player (although it's great) -- my SACD1000 is. I'm not sure about CD though. Probably the PS3 wins in this department.

I'd need over 2TB (I don't do compressed audio except for portable use) to hold all of my CDs & SACDs (I own over 3000). Also, I'd be too old to care by the time I finished ripping all of them to the PS3.

The PS3 is quite good for sound, but I don't like how high the decibel rating is on its output. I can only turn my speakers up a little bit before it is too loud.

So I use my PC for music, which has a creative X-fi in it. Sounds real nice and I can control the output levels so that I can get some juice (watts) flowing through my speakers.
