The laser projectors will debut in less than 4 weeks with the Hobbit, it will also have the new 12 channel sound system.

Right. In Toronto. A theater that just spent money on 2K won't see 4K until the 2K has run its course.

I big part of the problem is education. Back when they had 70mm I wish they had a quick intro with a person and a mic simply saying it was the largest screen and highest resolution projection in the state. Had they done that for each screening, word of mouth would have traveled and the theater would have been much busier all the time. Theater success is good for everybody.

No, people just don't care as much as you do. But the big question is if you hate digital IMAX so much, why are you going even if it is free?

I don't hate it. I hate that IMAX is conceding a huge part of what makes the IMAX brand: Image Quality.

People won't care as much as I do, that is for certain. But if people knew that it was better, they'd choose it over another. People can't choose what they don't know exists.

So then if what you hate is what you hate, why go back?

Lack of alternatives. I haven't been to the 4K Atmos theater enough to know if I like it more. It's not as bright, which is no big deal for 2D (Only seen Lucy there). I've never been there for 3D yet.

So it looks like IMAX Digital is working on you....the 4K Atmos cannot be as bright . Unless two projectors are used which is very unlikely.

Right. Projector stacking is giving IMAX a brightness boost. I am really interested to see how bright it will look on the massive IMAX screen when I go for the Hobbit. 4X the image size at least. Should be interesting.

Just because I go doesn't mean it's good enough. If you go to a baseball game and all they have is porta-potties, that doesn't mean you like it.

The fact that you go pretty much tells me you like and are probably a closet fan. I can't stand Atmos, so I never go ever.

I don't think I ever said I didn't enjoy going. I just want better. I will say though, you not liking Atmos is pretty strange.

I'd gladly fork over $100 for them to roll though the Dark Knight Trilogy in IMAX. I'd be so happy if they brought back a run of "Filmed with 70mm IMAX" movies. They're not tossing the 70mm, so you never know.

Are they really going to roll out the laser 4K projection and 12 channel surround next month?

The Empirical 4K Atmos Theater in Portland (OMSI) was one of the more terrible theatrical experiences I've had. I was looking forward to it being a suitable replacement for D-IMAX, however it was sorely disappointing. Orange ambient light flooded the bottom portion of the screen, blowing out half of the image's black levels to a disturbing degree, the sound had an echo which destroyed clarity, the image looked terribly unsharp and washed out, and the volume level, despite an employee sitting in the theater "monitoring" the audience, was so low that even if it was world's best sound system it would have underwhelmed.

This is a theater utilizing the most expensive and largest Klipsch sound system, with Atmos, a dual 4K Barco set-up, and a 4 story screen. My point is that IMAX seemingly has a better quality standard, despite the smaller screen size and 2K projection. Presentation's in IMAX theaters are fairly consistent, whereas Atmos theaters are sort of a crapshoot. I feel comfortable when I go to an IMAX because of brand uniformity, I don't feel that way about the alternatives trying to dig into their market.

On paper that 4K system should have blown IMAX out of the water. Sounds like it was way out of tune.

I've never had a poor IMAX experience as long as I remember earplugs and sit in the right spot.

Digital IMAX 2K can be pretty easily beaten, but requires a greater degree of care than what is typical in most theaters, unfortunately.

.
Absolutely not true, there is so much more to projection than just 2k or 4k. There is no projector on the market that can duplicate the IMAX Digitals 22 foot Lamberts on the screen. That is what is the most important, and that is why IMAX modifies their images.

I wish people would stop always focusing on the K. There is also no such thing as 4K 3D in cinemas either.

Barco makes the Digital IMAX projectors, Christie before that. Brightness is not proprietary.

Default Digital IMAX vs Regular 4K

I'll be interested to see how they are able to maintain brightness with the digital projectors on the real IMAX screen. With such a massive screen, I'll be surprised of the brightness is similar. Using the same projectors I don't know how it could be.
