Question Playstation 3 BD "Grain" Question.

I searched but I couldn't find a definite answer...

Now I've read about the grain in the BD playback on the PS3. I see it even on my Pirates BDs (which kinda ruins it). My question is, is this problem unavoidable? Can it be fixed?

Specs:
Player: Playstation 3 (Settings on 1080i/connected via HDMI)
TV: Samsung HL-S4266W (720p Native/1080i)

Grain is inherent to film. It's not a BD or PS3 issue.

Default ps3 and pirates

I don't know how you saw grain in pirates. I watched them both multiple times on my ps3 and havent even noticed the slightest amount of grain even in all the nighttime shots of the film. I was looking very hard to notice any problems too.

Do you have the latest Firmware update? I've played both pirates on my PS3 and didn't notice any grain.

Try playing with some setting on you TV. I'd turn off noise reduction and turn down the brightness setting. Turning both of those settings down reduced grain for me.

Which is exactly why I had to ask this question one more time. I do have the latest firmware update.

Played with the settings you mentioned, and thanks, looks a lot better.

One more question:
My 720p Native TV can do 1080i. At 42", what resolution would be better? I know the difference between the two but I guess the question is more, would I notice any difference on a 42" screen?

Well with update 1.8 you can run directly in 720p, so try it and see what works best for you. btw Sony BDs (and the T2) have a test pattern which you can use to set the sharpness control more or less flat (not peaking) because having the sharpness going overboard brings the grain up at the same time that the extra edge sharpness is actually degrading the image and making it lose its high definition.

Complaining about grain in a movie shot on standard film is like complaining about how your car revs up when you hit the gas. It's supposed to be there.

Are you sure you're seeing grain and not confusing artifacts or some defect in the picture caused by bad settings? Because the film is pretty much master quality.

For a while I thought I was seeing grain in my BDs but as it turns out I believe I am seeing defects in the picture caused by my $500 HDTV. I saw a Samsung HDTV priced at $3000 and it looked noticably better than my set. I'll post a pic soon to show what I'm seeing.

Here's one pic I took of the NIN:Beside You in Time disc and how it looks on my TV. As you can see here, (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/nine...youintime.html) Peter Bracke gave it a 5 out of 5 star rating for PQ.

I have the same problem but people on here have told me that if might be my TV and not the PS3. I have a Samsung 61" 1080 DLP TV model
HL-S6167W and its connected to my ps3 via HDMI. They also suggested that I might be sitting too close.

Apocalypto is supposed to look spectacular but it had noticable "grain" which IMO made it look bad. This is the case with most of my blu-rays too.

Maybe it is our TVs.

I submitted a similar post earlier last week, I too noticed grain, especially during darker scenes.

I received some excellent responses which you can read here:

Not sure what you are highlighting there in that pic. However this might be the worst attempt at using an example in the history of man. In the shot you attached, the band is being filmed behind a gigantic 80-ft translucent veil/curtain. It looks a bit funky in any circumstance. Not to mention this is concert footage in the dark with lots of colorful lighting. I wouldn't tweek my settings for this scene.

I'm highlighting the banding that's going on in the circle and other parts of the frame. And I understand the band is behind a screen. I can take other shots from after they lift the screen and show to prove my point.

Then do that, because there is so much happening in that shot anyway that it wouldn't look clear even if you were standing there in person. I have the same disc and watched on my PS3 and don't recall any banding but I wasn't trying to seek it out either.

I can't see any banding in that picture on my monitor

Unless you mean the vertical lines, which I'm assuming are part of the screen.

Saw 3 Intro

Now I know my camera isn't the greatest, but what I pointed out is what I'm seeing on the screen. Also, I don't have the Kingdom of Heaven disc, but I thought I saw the same things on that disc as well. And here is a review by Peter Bracke, 4 and a half stars out of 5. http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/kingdomofheavendc.html

Then I have no answer for you, Bruuce. I play NIn on my PS3 and really don't remember such glaring issues. Is it a TV thing? I'm using a Sony SXRD. Just saying, I don't think it has to do w/ the PS3 which is what this thread was all about.
