Default Lossless audio on a smaller HT setup quesiton!!

I just bought the onkyo HTIB package about two months ago thinking I could get away with PCM not knowing that you couldn't do that with a ps3.

So now Circuit is selling the 606 for $439 and I have a 10% off coupon so I can get it for $399. I'm thinking I can sell my 560 for about $200 on ebay or something.

My buddy doesn't think that lossless audio is going to be that noticeable with the speakers I'm using from the HTIB which are smaller in size. Thoughts?

you can ONLY do PCM with the ps3... unless you meant bitstream? but through HDMI, the PS3 can do LPCM of your lossless or HD audio tracks.

Great, so answer my question about getting it through smaller speakers?

you can get it just fine through smaller speakers... it depends on the speaker's ability just how much difference it will make though.

My buddy thinks that the lossless audio will be too much for my speakers to handle.

The difference is probably going to be noticeable on all speakers. How much the difference depends on your speakers. If you want to upgrade your receiver, go ahead. Just remember having higher quality speakers will make a bigger difference.

I'm using the 7.1 surround speakers from the Onkyo 5100 HTIB. I believe they are the same speakers that come in the 9000 HTIB that has the 605 in the box with it.

I'm just trying to figure out if I'd be waisting my time by upgrading the receiver?

Below is a link to the setup I'm using with a ps3

Just as an fyi, the onkyo package with the 605 is 90 watts a speaker versus 60 watts in the 5100 package however the 560 receiver has a higher RMS by 30.

I'm just trying to figure out if my speakers in the 5100 package can handle an lossless audio?

Hmmmm,

Looks like ok speakers.

Lossless doesn't pose a "threat" to speakers anymore then the lossy soundtracks do. You should be able to hear a difference but you may want better speakers eventually.

If you amp is rated for stronger speakers that's not a problem because when the amp works less hard it makes less distortion. You just need some sense as to if you overdriving the speakers. (Careful as some soundtracks are very dynamic.)

(My own speakers may not be "much" better then those... I don't know... anyway, might as well upgrade what you can when you can.)

Have you considered selling the whole system and starting over? You'd probably be better off buying a new receiver and piecing together speakers individually starting with left and right channels, then adding a center, then sub and finally surrounds.

I realize the speakers arent the best option, I'm trying to determine if they'll get me by for a period until I upgrade?

Am I going to notice the difference of lossless audio through these speakers or is it like getting my 90 yr old grandma a boob job? What would be the point?

i think you will notice some difference. if your planning on upgrading anyway, go for it. if you really want to test after you get the receiver, you can always set the ps3 to bitstream a lossy track then switch over to lpcm and select a hd track on the fly

1. lets put it this way... i like future proofing all my purchases. and if i plan on buying something, id like to make sure its not something id 'make do' with so to speak. granted, a lot of people like going that route, i guess ive learned a little bit that a lot of research can go a lot farther, and well, save you money in the process.

hmm, a good analogy is, you want steak, a really nice porterhouse steak, but dont have enough money to get one... theres the pork chop available for x amount thats in your pocket...

"how hungry are you?"

try selling the entire setup, and hopefully you'd get a good return on em.

2. grandma with a boob job.. whats wrong with that? on a serious note, with a little bit of upgrading (better speaker wires - read: 16awg and NOT monster), tweaked environment (using a spl meter), and acoustic treatments... youd get yourself a better immersion so to speak. even on standard dvds.

again... "how hungry are you?"

save up for that porterhouse.

im sure its well worth it when the time comes.

Well, I bit and got the 606 for $404 today. On sale at Circuit City for $439 then I had a AAA 8% off that they honored and got it for $404.

Everything works and it does make a big difference. There is room for improvement with the speakers but definately a lot more dynamic and crisp.

I watched Rambo last week on 5.1 ex, and then tonight in dts hd 7.1 and WOW.

My only issue now is that when my ps3 is switching between menu to disc etc, I get a fuzzy picture for a sec and then it clears up. What could that be? I have a samsung 46 lcd 1080p, ps3 and 605?

ANy thoughts?

check to see if your samsung has any firmware updates...I remember reading someone else who had hdmi connection issues, and found an update.

I don't know if I would say its an issue? It seems to get fuzzy for a sec when the detection of hdmi from the tv kicks in. Say your on the ps3 home screen and select the movie your going to watch. The TV losses detection of the ps3 for a sec when it switches and when it reestablishes its fuzzy for like a second then clears up again.

I have a wii hooked up component to my receiver too, and it doesn't do this so I'm wondering if its some sort of video connection option in the ps3 menu?

I'll really be able to narrow it down later today when they install my directv and I hook it up HDMI.

It's HDMI handshaking. It'll only happen on HDMI connections- some just go black for a second, some display that "multicolored snow" that you're probably seeing. You might want to see if there's a firmware update that will allow everything to handle it a little more smoothly but it has to do with HDCP and HDMI and all that comes with it.

Default Difference

I tried it at the store today. Even with $300 speakers you hear the difference between regular sound and HD Sound. So yeah, go for the 606
