Default Good 2.0 or 2.1 Demo Material

I'm looking for some demo material that I can put on my iPod or on a CD... if at all possible I'd like free-to-use samples as well (like 30 second clips or sound logos) but I'm specifically looking for something that will have a good stereo effect (like the fade between the two speakers) and a few family-friendly-ish songs with some good bass (all mine are rap or rock that are a bit too edgy)

Thanks!

demo for who? because honestly, there are a couple of things to consider...

1) forget iPod, stick with CD, and not MP3 on CD, actual CD

2) for 2 channel you're not trying to achieve sound "jumping from speaker to speaker" or panning, etc.... you just want it to sound like you're in an opera house with musicians in front of you.

my suggestions...

There is John Coltrane album that has "Favorite Things" on it (from the Sound of Music) and it has great range.....

Get a lot of "Big-Band" type of stuff..... and get a lot of accoustical guitar. Not sure what your tastes are, but really any "Well" produced CD, will be tailored for 2 channel demo material

EDIT:

Beethoven and Chopin have POWERFUL compositions

I agree with Beta Man. Stay away from the compressed junk that comes out of an i pod for demos. Rush has a great two channel sound as well, and Pink Floyd can be quite impressive if played through an above average system.

Find yourself a good Stereophile Test CD 3 or any number of Test CD's out there (you can possibly find some at Partsexpress). Acoustic Jazz is always a good choice. I wish I still had my Denon Test CD toolkit. I think I still have my Stereophile CD.

Adding to what others have said (avoid MP3 like the plague!), here's an out of left field suggestion: check out Equinox by Jean-Michel Jarre (if you can find it, the 200g MFSL pressing is to die for!). Although it's all electronic--so no real acoustic instruments--it's well recorded, and sounds great. It might be a bit hard to find, though, given that it was released in the late 70's, but maybe Amazon might have it.

If you're a fan of the genre, most of Jarre's other albums are great, too.

There's been some recent John Powell scores that have actually had a room filling effect even just being played in stereo. It's not like a simulated surround thing, it's just an effect his scores have on my ears for some reason... and others.
