I watched the Kino Lorber Blu-ray of Cover Up late last night, and enjoyed it.
An insurance investigator, played by Dennis O'Keefe (Raw Deal, T-Men), travels to a small town to investigate an apparent suicide and finds himself surrounded by tight-lipped residents who are more than a little reluctant to cooperate with him. The film is pleasantly simple, and most viewers can pretty much imagine where this story is going because of the title itself. Cover Up is one of those not-quite-film-noir movies on the surface, but I personally find that the rather blasé sugarcoating turn during the final scene gives the movie a much more cynical noir-esque edge than others might give it credit for having. This development definitely compels one to think twice about idyllic Normal Rockwell towns. Dennis O'Keefe is quite good in the lead role, but William Bendix (Lifeboat, Crashout) really steals the show as a casual-minded sherif. The gorgeous Barbara Britton, who was famous as a "Revlon girl" on television a few years later, is quite a stunner in this movie, and I wish that she had starred in more film noir movies...or, better yet, in all film noir movies. This film looks great on this Blu-ray, and I have no complaints about the picture quality. The audio is somewhat muted, and I had to turn the volume up higher than usual to enjoy the film, but I was nonetheless able to catch all of the dialogue. |
