Default HD DVD vs. BD: Perspectives from leaders of both camps

http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/art...&page_number=1

Nice four page article. My favorite quote from it is this:

Quote:
SAV: Is this similar to how some DVDs look better than others, even though they're all encoded with MPEG-2?

Warner: Absolutely. We're going to initially use a number of different kinds of encoding due to various circumstances that require or allow for that. But no matter what, at the end of the day, we still have a certain benchmark that says, "Either this product is acceptable to put out in the marketplace or it's not." And that's what's most important — what the consumer sees, and not necessarily how they see it.
Amen to that. If MPEG-2 and VC-1 both look terrific, then it doesn't really matter which codec is used.

Well it sort of does.

I don't think it has been HD-DVD proponents who've made a big deal out of over all storage space. Nor have many tried to equate more storage=better video.

That's been primarily a blu ray argument. So I think from that PoV which codec is used is important.

Me personally I'm not really concerned over the codec issue. I'll let my eyes judge.

lets be honest with ourselves. the first gen of br or hd-dvd isn't even going to come close to filling the disc. why? (of course, i'm sure someone in the next post will start spewing some bitrate numbers or something and call bully on me) no one knows what they are doing large scale yet. for all i care, encode it as a realplayer file. all i want is the best possible picture. the great advantage of the additional storage space is that once companies know how to better utilize all this extra spce, we're going to have better products. maybe a new codec will be developed that will take advatage of the storage and give us an even better picture. maybe the codec exists already.

the point is, if the video file is 1 meg or 100 gb, who really cares. we want the best we can get. if that is mpeg-2 or vc-1 who really cares as long as we are getting the best possible product.

Agreed on both points.
