As far as how it works, I don't particularly know (too technical for my understanding), but if I had to guess, I'd say they take the original elements (which they used to make the 5.1 mixes) and then remix them into a 7.1 version of it... making a DEDICATED 7.1 mix (compared to a "matrixed" version done via one's receiver). ~Alan |

I was reading his posts and saw he did the sound on Superbad and I figured "yeah, this guy should know what he's talking about." So I believe him, it's just I am not sure how all this works. |

As I said, I'm not an expert on the technical issues (and hopefully someone can speak up who is), BUT not exactly.
From my understanding, matrixing 5.1 soundtracks to 7.1 (like our receivers do) is done by simply (willy-nilly like) spreading SOME of the sound around to our rear speakers. By doing DISCRETE mixes, the audio is laid out... hopefully with a plan, and not "willy-nilly" like "matrixing" the 5.1 soundtracks to 7.1 like our receivers do. As I said, if anyone knows more than I do about this, PLEASE speak up! ~Alan |

![]() But seriously, I do hope that someone can clear this up. I know when stuff is matrixed there can be sound effects/music that bleed over and build up in the rear when they're not supposed to, unlike discrete tracks. |

As you said earlier, I would expect Disney's upcoming 7.1 mixes to be as well... ~Alan |

God I hope that Peter Jackson supervises the transfer for Lord of The Rings Blu-Rays and doesn't put up with any shit from the studio. It better have reference picture quality and DTS-MA lossless track or I will be severely disappointed!

Wicky has been informing that Warner is working on releasing all Blu-ray titles with HD sound. I am just about fed up with that (no HD sound), but I will wait a couple of more months before making a final judgement on the situation.

That's where I am at. I figure HD DVD has to be dead for at least a while before things really start to change. But it's gotta be pretty obvious to WB that something needs to be done. I mean, every other studio uses lossless/uncompressed audio in some form on every single release now. That has to say something...

I think Warner's strat is to release without lossless so that when they eventually release the 1.1 or 2.0 featured special editions they will include lossless making it a more compelling buy (more features and lossless is more tempting than just more features) for double dipping.
I like double dips ... it's fun ... it also allows them to make more money off of richer folks, making prices lower for poorer folks. Win win. |
