Default Why no Buzz about new low cost BD burner?

I'm surprised that there doesn't seem to be much buzz on the forum about the new low cost LG BD burner. It's in CC's weekly ad that came out Sunday 7/13. The Link is HERE. It has industry leading 6X write speed for BD-R and is selling for $229.

People are caught up with the gaming news. Best Buy slashed $20 of its Insigna brand BD player, and Warner is cutting the MSR on Blu-ray movies for Q4. People gravitate towards the HOT topics.

Nice find. I'm shocked they got these out so quickly. The official release announcement was just a few weeks ago, and Circuit City already has them in an ad... that's pretty impressive. And, yeah... nice price.

It would be nice if the blanks weren't $10-15

Considering my girlfriend (and hopefully soon to be fiancé) is a film student and is currently filming in 1080i with her camera/school equipment, this sounds most intriguing... Nice find, sir! I'll probably snag one at the end of the week when my next credit card cycle begins (I just went to 7.1 surround and the price put a dent in the wallet... ).

I agree that until the blank BD-R prices drop to under $5 each burning BD's will not become mainstream. My first DVD burner cost me $300 and the blank discs were several dollars each. As demand for blank discs gradually grows the prices will fall, but it's going to take some time. If we start getting standalone BD recorders with built-in ATSC and QAM tuners (hopefully some will also offer 2-way CableCard support) this will help grow the market more quickly.

blanks are still way to pricey for my liking! until the price of blank media falls dramatically people will be happy to use regular dvd blanks for their buring needs

But what if they want a full-length HD movie that's not considerably compressed? That's my justification, at least.

The price of the burner isnt whats holding it back, its the price of the media. When the media price comes down, people will be talking more about the burners.

I would buy a retail movie no prob, but I was referring to my previous post about HD films that are non-studio-produced. Either way, $20 for two BD-25's is not too bad for the chance to remove home videos/personal movies off of a hard drive.

Default Pricey disks

there is no way i would purchase a BD recorder with the prices
on a 25GB BD costing around $25.00 dollars each.
Yes i have seen 25GB BD disks online for $19.99 but shipping was $8.99

I went down to my local computer store a few days ago
and they had only 3 BD disks on the shelf and they where only
25GB not 50GB.

i'll look at the recorders when i see disks selling for around $5.00

I have a small HD camera and i edit my videos with Ulead MovieStudio 11 plus
and then i burn them to a format called AVCHD.
this AVCHD format is recorded in a Blu-ray format on a standard DVD
you get about 30mins on a 4.7 disk and one full hour on a DVD DL.
works great. and yes it plays in any Blu-ray player in HD at a cost of
10 cents per disk or 75 cents for a DVD DL

Name brand 2X BD-Rs sell for around $13 to $15 each on-line with free shipping. The 4X BD-Rs are going for about $20 each. This is based at on-line prices at supermediastore.com (that I have used for bulk DVD-R purchases). Better than the prices you mention, but still expensive compared to the $0.25 for DVD-Rs. However, if you have a HD camcorder and want to archieve or distribute you edited home videos (or semi-pro videos) then these prices shouldn't be a showstopper for many potential owners.

Default Anyone need a coaster?

I can venture my own reason why people may be a bit hesitant about the LG burner.

I bought the LG Multi-Blu Burner (forget the model number) a few days ago, and lickitey-split, four hours after I got it home, I had a $20 coaster sitting on my desktop! I/O error or something like that.

This ain't the first time that i've burned a plastic donut using a new optical drive, but this the MOST EXPENSIVE screw up. Most probablly, it was my fault - I was using a network computer to access the Blu-Ray-drived computer while it was burning the disk, so that was most probable cause of failure. Then again, I could have been using a drive that was to full to use as the buffer; in my haste to burn, I didn't check the temp files drive.

Anyhoo, $20 is a lot to pay for a mistake. When the media comes down, people might be a bit more likely to adopt a BR burner.

BTW, my system is a Q6600 proc, 3GB of RAM, and 1.2 TB storage, so the system dynamics should not be an issue for the problem.

Verbatim 2x BD-Rs 25GB are $9.00 at Meritline (everyday price). Shipping adds a bit, but still works out to under $10 a piece in batches of 10 for very high quality media. Better still, the Verbatim 2x discs burn at 4x in every 4x burner I've tried them in, and at 6x in the LG drives!

Default Success

After purchasing another BD-R, I was able to get a good burn from the new LG drive. There were a couple of things that I did change from the first session; no activity on the computer while the burn went down, the temporary file was moved to a drive with 250GB of free space (only 60 needed), and I switched from a TDK to a Sony disc.

Any one of those changes could have resulted in a good writing session. The burn for full disc capacity (somewhere around 23.7 GB) took about 46 minutes. If it continues this well, the LG burner should be a solid performer.

I spent the majority of yesterday evening (after dinner, of course) playing around with this drive. Thankfully I bought a Sony BD-RE disc, so no coasters for me. Eventually I was able to convert an unlicensed HD anime MKV and get it to play properly on my PS3! The only problem I'm having is that I can't get the subtitles to display properly, but that is an issue with the program I'm using to convert the MKV and not the drive itself. This drive is awesome!
