Default Sony Starts Blu-ray Lines, 50 GB Discs Will Spin In October

http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6336382.html

From the article:

Quote:
The company now has three Blu-ray replication lines in the U.S. with the ability to make 25,000 single-layer 25GB Blu-ray discs a day.
Quote:
Sony DADC said it expects to add manufacturing lines and increase capacity to nearly 5 million discs a month by October, ahead of the critical fourth quarter. By then, it says, it also will be able to make dual-layer 50GB discs on six lines.
Quote:
It’s unclear when the studios will have a title on a 50GB disc ready for market. Blu-ray supporting studios—particularly Buena Vista Home Entertainment—have been awaiting the 50GB discs

In addition, there are many other Blu-ray disc manufacturers like TDK who are already shipping 50 GB blank disc media, so to say that now that ALL Blu-ray movie releases are destined to be SL 25 GB discs is a big stretch for me. You have Panasonic also manufacturing discs, Verbatim, etc. Will it not depend on the studio as to what disc they will choose to put their movie on? Moreover, when I see articles like this for hidefdigest stating that all Sony releases will be on DL 50GB discs...

I have to wonder where HD DVD proponents are getting their information from? That is, to claim that all Blu-ray movies will be SL at launch, which I have seen all over the web?

I guess will know for sure in another month.

The same Microsoft employees and plants that have overrun at least one prominent forum, for starters. That's where the FUD and misinformation usually comes from: Straight from MS, directly or indirectly.

What is the issue of single or double layer for movies? My understanding was most movies will fit on 25GB with space left over. As there will be backlog of movies for some time to come we will be greatful for any decent movie released. The critical use for dual layer is in the computer application, and already there are dual layer disks out there - players to follow soon. This sounds like some confusion being needlessly created. Why is M$ so hostile towards blu ray, after all they are up for royalty (I would assume) for every blu ray player sold (I know they will get a little more out of HD-DVD). I wonder, if no one uses their compression standard will it get dropped from the blu ray standard?

Found this article today. It states that both Sony and Panasonic are slate for June to ship 25GB AND 50GB media with TDK, Memorex, Verbatim, and Imation to follow...

I just see some movies coming on 50GB dual-layered discs come June/July in my opinion.
