This was my favorite film of the year, bar none. It perfectly captured the feeling of reading the book and Pynchon in general, the feeling of getting lost on the most entertaining road imaginable, to the point that you dread having to go straight ever again. I didn't even notice most of the changes and exclusions when I watched it (I did notice the changing of the ending, but I can't argue with the ending as it exists here, even if I think the book's ending is one of the finest pieces of prose I've yet read), I was that wrapped up in it. Everyone was perfect in their roles, but special praise is directed towards Joaquin Phoenix and Josh Brolin, who make a better Doc and Bigfoot than I could have ever imagined (Bigfoot beating up on Doc outside the Wolfmann house was my biggest laugh by far).

Wow. Kinda surprised by the overwhelming love for this. I guess I'll have to be the dissenter, but the rhythm of the film never worked for me. The pacing and plotting is very, very laaaaax, and I kept waiting for it to jive, if you will, but nope. After a while I stopped caring where the plot was heading and I just hoped for more offbeat character moments.
Joaquin Phoenix's reactionary performance was fairly amusing, but most of the supporting cast is wasted. For the second time in a row now after Guardians of the Galaxy Benicio del Toro who I consider one of our great actors is given barely anything to work with. Ugh. As a fan of Walk the Line and Joaquin and Reese's chemistry in that film I enjoyed seeing them together again, but wish there was more! Hong Chau as Jade was a highlight. Was pleased whenever she was onscreen.... ![]() The production values are top notch from the cinematography, costumes, and set design, but I wish the script and direction had any sense of momentum or purpose. It's been too long since I've seen Hard Eight, and have only seen it once, I remember it not leaving too much of an impression on me, but it's likely this will go down as my least favorite PTA film. |

If you can get on the wavelength of Inherent Vice, It'll be as satisfying as anything that PTA has done. As soon as it finished, I got that chill that I get when I see something special. Wasn't disappointed in the slightest, and it even surpassed my expectations.

RDJ was supposed to be in this?
Thank goodness that bullet was dodged, he's fine but nowhere near capable of what Phoenix did here. That being said, I definitely hope Phoenix is not in PTA's next, or is at most a tertiary character. Even Scorsese took breaks from De Niro and Lynch took breaks from McLaughlan and Kubrick didn't bother with repeats at all, almost. |

1. Because I have absolutely loved four of their collaborations (Aviator was merely decent imo), including Wolf, but one wonders how long they can keep it up. A break would probably be in order, if for no other reason than to make The Irishman/I Heard You Paint Houses/Whatever The F*** It's Called This Week. 2. I wouldn't go that far! Hell, I watched Punch-Drunk Love, and that had Sandler as the lead. But yeah, it would definitely have suffered. RDJ has his niche (not a bad niche to be in, if your going to get typecast, I suppose, but the fact is, it is there). |

Not an enjoyable film for me. I've read the novel and 'get' Pynchon and this film seems to exist solely for Anderson to conquer an 'un-filmable' author. I wish he would have taken a step back and considered whether it would make a good film.
Brings me no pleasure to feel this way since everything Anderson has directed before has been nothing less than a solid 'A' for me and The Master was incredible. |

Confused I'm so, don't I know I feel how. Know loved I the direction and characters, but know don't what the **** was going on. This either masterpiece was, or the biggest of the year disappointment. Decide I can't. Viewing need another, and probably after that one more.
3.5/5, I think... |

'...make a good film' is a stupid way of describing it by me since that is completely subjective I meant more to make it a film at all. Ideally the adaptation of a novel does something the written page can't. I don't think that was the case here. It's a more or less strict adaptation and I just don't get why Anderson chose this for a project other than to 'conquer' Pynchon.
He's such a good writer in his own right I'm just bummed out that this is all that came of this project. Robert Elswit killed it though which is no surprise. |
