Default The Toxic Avenger: Part II (1989)

Courtesy of Criterion Collection
[Show spoiler]OK, you caught me, it's Troma

Quote:
Toxie's mean, green, and back on the screen! Melvin Junko was a nerdy 98lb weakling until he fell into a vat of toxic waste, turning him into the first ever superhuman superhero from New Jersey. This time the hideously deformed creature of superhuman size and strength takes on Tokyo. The Toxic Avenger Part II is a spectacular sequel with even more ingenious special effects, even more bizarre action, and even more unbelievably famous fight scenes. He's come a long way from Tromaville, baby!

Special Features:

Director's commentary
At home with Toxie
A word from villainess Lisa Gaye
Toxie on Japanese TV
Troma Trailers

Now let's see if they can top the 88 Films version.

[Show spoiler]It won't.

So by Troma's release schedule, we will see this movie by the end of the summer at the earliest. There is no way they are making that date.

Why not release parts 2 & 3 together? Like a double feature. We all know 2 and 3 suck big time.

You had me for a second with that Criterion comment. Probably wishful thinking on my part. I'm still planning on getting the 88 Films version since its coming sooner, and in a slipcover no less. Still good news for those who don't import.

He copied parted of dr. wai's post. I see these accounts popping up seemingly a couple of times a week lately - nothing but mimicking word for word some of what others have said.

Already got the 88 Films version but that's cool it's coming out here before terribly long.

Now if only Lloyd Kaufman would go back and edit 2 and 3 together to make a 90-minute movie that doesn't suck. Toxie 2 has a lot of good stuff in it, it just drags too long. Throw in the necessary 5 minutes or so of ending footage from Toxie 3 and it'd be a neat flick at 90 minutes.

Oh. My guess is it's some type of spambot. They're programmed to repeat part of something another person said so it appears they're making normal comments that are on topic. I think the hope is that they can fly under the radar before posting actual spam, though it seems pretty transparent.

Forget II and III, bring on a U.S. release of Citizen Toxie!

Trying to decide between waiting for the Troma release, or getting the 88 Films disc now.

I went with the Troma release for the first movie, understanding that the picture quality is slightly inferior thanks in part to scratches and nicks. But I really wanted the new extras.

Am I right in the assumption that Part II's supplements are basically the same across both releases? I know the 88 Films disc is the most uncut version of the movie available, so that's some incentive to grab that one.

EDIT: NM, decided to go with 88 Films.

So the 88 films Blu is longer than the Troma Blu? I wish they would do come comparsion shots of the two releases over at Capsaholic. Right now they only have the 88 Films Blu vs the old DVD. http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...D=2195#auswahl <Looks pretty damn good to me. I don't really see any compression issues...

^They still need to do some comparison shots of the first Toxic Avenger Blu (Troma vs 88)

Part II is watchable, Part III is shit.

Do Troma still claim that the films were shot back to back? I always thought that was odd given that the mask looks completely different in Toxie III and the films also have a different look to them as well.

The story I've always read is that they shot so much material for Toxic Avenger II, that they decided to split it into 2 movies.

According to Troma's Facebook and Twitter accounts, this and The Class of Nuke 'Em High Part II are being pushed back.

I went with the upcoming version rather than 88. Hope we can get some more info on it.....I'll return back to best buy if the 88 version ends up better.

Also, the reasons the movies look so different is that Part II takes place mostly in Japan, while Part III takes mostly in New Jersey. The mask is different because they used two different masks: one here, one in Japan. They didn't shoot all of three while filming part two, but they shot enough that they knew they had enough for a third movie. They shot some odds and ends to make the part three feel like a stand alone movie and not a "volume" like they do now.

Wow... just wow. A review of Troma's TOXIC AVENGER 2 Blu popped up over at 10K Bullets, and I'll just skip to the important parts.

Quote:
The Toxic Avenger Part II comes on a 25 GB single layer BluRay. The film is presented in a 1080 progressive widescreen. Though Troma is using the same source that they supplied 88 Films. These are two completely different encodes as Troma’s file size for the feature film is about 16.2 GB, while 88 Films file size for the feature film is about 27.2 GB. And as confounding as the differences inn these two releases file sizes, this is not the last of differences since the Troma transfer is presented in 720 progressive, while 88 Films transfer is in the 1080 progressive. To compare these two transfer anymore would be futile.

This release comes with one audio option, a DTS-HD stereo mix in English. And once again here is another area where Troma is not exactly the same as the aforementioned 88 Films release which presents the audio in a LCPM format and when Japanese was spoken English subtitles have been included for that release. For this release from Troma the have omitted the Japanese dialog by overdubbing what is being said in English. Quality wise the Troma mix is in great shape as dialog always clear and everything sounds balanced. Also the sound effects and the film’s score sounds appropriately robust.
The full review (Warning: includes a NSFW screenshot):
http://10kbullets.com/reviews/t/toxi...ray-dvd-combo/

After their RABID GRANNIES debacle, I was hoping to see the company spring back with this release. Apparently not so much...
