Default DVD to BR...LOTR and Matrix Box Sets?

Hello All

We recently had to get a new set when our plasma went out and went with a Sony Projector. To say the least the picture is huge and along with it finer details. I've been going thru lots of BR and even DVD's which some of my favorites are the Matrix and LOTR versions.. They're ok but it's obvious not the same as the BR discs.

I don't have anything to compare a movie which I have both DVD and BR versions but am thinking about getting the Box Set of Matrix and LOTR. Trouble is which one and is it really worth it or is something else coming or what.

The LOTR Set I've read about is the Extended Version and not the Theatrical Version is the one to get like here...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...f_rd_i=desktop

The Matrix is the one I'm unsure of and the only one I've seen is this one but I thought there were newer versions out there...

http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Trilo...eywords=Matrix

I just wanted to hear from anyone who did go from the DVD to BR versions, their thoughts if it were worth it or what and if they knew of any newer ones coming. Thanks for the help.

I don't have either of these sets, but do have the digibook of the first Matrix and it destroys the dvd I used to own. Some complain about color timing, but it's how I recall it in the theater, with everything in the Matrix a slight off green tint.

The Blu-ray's are a big upgrade on both sets and all of the extras are carried over. Get them!

The upgrade on all six of these films is substantial for both PQ and AQ. I'd definitely buy them.

2 sets where in my opinion it's easy to pull the trigger on upgrading to the blu's.

In 99,9% of the cases, the best DVD upscale is bested even by the lousiest Blu-ray.

Congrats on going front projection. What size screen are you using? I went FP last year and it's like watching everything over again in a completely different universe.

Both the Matix and LOTR are strong upgrades; LOTR extended in particular as they have nice, detailed, film-like presentation. I own the first Matrix movie and it could use a remaster, but it's not bad and still a big upgrade over the DVD. I haven't watched the Matrix sequels on my set-up.

This.

There are *VERY* few exceptions (if any at all), and for those exceptions it pertains to a flaw/mistake such as color timing rather than actually having a worse image quality. Worst case is a blu-ray is a slight upgrade (i.e. if we are talking a perfect DVD encode vs a mediocre blu-ray). Usually the blu-ray is either a major upgrade or something completely revelatory. I don't know if either of these are revelatory, but certainly they are major upgrades IMO.

A few exceptions include Hatari! and The Color of Money.

It was actually blue-tinted in the original release, not green-tinted. I thought I remembered it as green too but it turns out my memory was just influenced by later DVD viewings (since they did alter the color timing for later DVD releases along with the blu ray). See HD Goofnut's post here, along with the archived version of the original 1999 Matrix website here which has an image gallery, the images do all look bluish, for example:

I don't have a problem with this change myself, but I can understand that some might want to see the movie exactly as it was shown originally, or might just like the original color timing better.

The LOTR set is my favorite dvd to blu upgrade in my collection. The PQ, the AQ, the box, the extras...it's just a killer set. Although there are six discs of extras, and 4 commentaries per film, there aren't many (any?) special features that weren't already available on the dvds.

And the extended editions are the way to go imo. Gives the films a lot more room to breathe. The price drops down to $40 from time to time...

The Matrix movies, I just went cheap and bought the 4 Film Favorites version with Animatrix for $15. The only one that's a must own for me is the first one. Definitely a major upgrade over the dvd.
