Those mentioning 4K are making a good point. If you plan to go 4K and haven't got an Oppo already you might want to consider waiting a year and see if they start to have Blu-ray players with 4K capability for the new disc format.
If not, then an Oppo right now will be an easier selection. Personally, I will only replace having an Oppo with another Oppo once they jump into 4K. |

Older models BDP-103 came out 10-03-2012 still available BDP-105 came out 11-16-2012 (discontinued) Current models BDP-103D came out 10-01-2013 BDP-105D came out 1-13-2014 So please tell me again how these players are 3 years old, as you need to get the facts correct IMHO. First 4K native players need to have loaders that support 66/100 GB UHD media. Also need HEVC decoders SOC thats shipping in quantity. Then you need native 4Kx2K video processing that outputs using HDMI 2.0 HDCP 2.2 interfaces. I serious doubt the Christmas 2015 we will see anything but something rushed along mediocre access/loading times players, wait until you get some impressions/reviews before buying a 4K native player. ![]() Currently its looking like late 2016 to early 2017 for next Oppo players. Both the current 103D/105D provide 4Kx2K that offers 4K/60 Hz using a 4:2:0 YCbCr color space. Which can be useful for current BD content on a UDTV if the display doesn't provide comparable functionality. |

I've just started using an oppo, and other than the movable subtitles, and the fact it had a region free mod, I'm actually missing the functionality of my PS3. I could run extras at 1.5speed with sound on the PS3. Can't on the Oppo. I got so used to having it.
And the other kicker is the universal remote codes or CEC HDMI control on the oppo from my reciever doesn't work very well. Play works. Pause doesn't. And the oppo remote? You can't even hit play to toggle pause. And they have the stop button on the left hand side! |

A PS4 should work fine as a standard blu-ray player; it's only when you're looking to use additional features the Oppo provides that makes the higher price a worthwhile investment.
For example:
So, for all the reasons above, I could justify the $500+ price tag. If you don't really care about any of that, then you may not see the value in an Oppo. |
