I got a PS4 from my wife for Christmas. It replaced the PS3 I'd have from probably five years. I just watched my first Blu on it yesterday and am I crazy or does it not look as good as the PS3?
Is it possible they did something that made the quality worse on the PS4 or are my eyes misleading me? |

I honestly can't tell a difference in picture quality between the PS3 & PS4. I still prefer to utilize my PS3 for Blu-ray movies and Netflix because of the remote though. Another reason is my wife. To this day she still can't figure out how to use the controller to navigate the menus and watch a movie.

From what I have gathered on the internet and various forums. The PS3 is the better BD player. PS4 isn't that good or good enough to be someone's main BD player. This is just what I've read on various sites and forums.
Personally I use my PS3 still as my BD player or my stand alone BD player. Depending on what room I'm in. |

I've never owned a stand alone Blu-Ray player because I've always used my PS3. I'm positive the picture isn't as good on the new PS4. I'm actually thinking of going and buying a stand alone player. |

Got a Sony stand alone on black Friday a few years ago for the living room and it has worked perfectly for me. Never any issues.

My blu-rays look a bit better on my ps4 when played on my digital projector, but my ps4's picture in general is a little sharper, probably something to do with the HDMI. On my HDTVs, the picture quality is the same.
But obviously, if the opposite is true on your equipment you should do whatever you feel you need to. Standalone blu-ray players can be had for a very good price, though I've found that updating them can be more of a pain than it is with the consoles. Still, they have features the consoles don't. My eyes are only capable of 480p, so the PS4 looks just fine as a BR player to me

I love the PS4's blu-ray quality its beautiful, crisp and clear.
The only thing I wish is for it to be a region free player. |

I won't agree or disagree with this since I never tried to compare what my movies look like playing off the PS3 and PS4. The thing is, I don't get how the player itself would affect picture quality. That should be solely based on the actual transfer on the disc, using an HDMI cord over something older and your TV settings.
I could be wrong of course but I don't have two tvs to have side by side and two copies of the same film so I can put them in each system at the same time to compare. I don't have photographic memory so that's what I would need to do for an accurate and true comparison. |

Sorry if this has been asked a lot, but I haven't been able to find a clear answer. I've read that some people keep their TV's game mode turned on while watching blu-rays because it disables unwanted processing, but isn't the higher refresh rate necessary for proper 24fps playback? Does game mode force the TV to function as a 60hz model or does it only disable smoothing?
It's my assumption that game mode does disable the 120/240hz, so I keep it turned off and then manually turn off extra processing features. Thank you |

I recently had one of my Samsung players fail on me and I don't want to move one from another room or purchase a new one right now, so I've been using my PS4 to watch movies. One of my discs has a very small scratch. The disc in question skips when played on my PS4 yet when I tested it on 2 different Samsung players it didn't skip at all. So I'm assuming the PS4 is just more sensitive to scratches and fingerprints.

Thanks I wanted to be sure it wasn't my system and possibly a sign of failure to come. I'll try out my xbox one and see if it has the same issue.

The PS4 is primarily a "play from hard drive" device, with the disk mainly for loading and in part for copyright protection. It wasn't built with a high level of error tolerance for streaming, because if you're playing a game and it misses a piece of data it simply checks for it again, and by the time you're actually playing all of the data has already been copied into RAM. |
