As much as the BD and HDTV Software Media forum on AVSF are rightly ridiculed, the rest of the site is pretty okay.
So for those who are looking to get a new HDMI receiver and are contemplating on the Onkyo 605, here is the link for it. I do implore that once you got your own Onkyo 605, you can start doing your own user reports by appending to this thread here instead of over there. fuad |

Do you know Onkyo is going to be one of the first if not the first to come out with a reciever that will decode True HD, and DTS Master HD.

I have had this receiver for about a week now. Its sounds great. No issues at all. For an entry level receiver,it does a great job

Buyer Beware.
avforum reporting that the component connection is DOWNCOVERTNING to 720p Ugh! If you have a 1080p TV, you will get a worse picture by using component, and the Onkyo 605 only has 2 HDMI ins. ![]() Also, Onkyo 605 does not support PLIIx, which is stupid cuz the 604 did. |

I just bought the 605 at CC over the weekend. Haven't hooked it up but will post about it when I do. Also I wished I had took advantage of a mis-listing on the 805 early Sunday morning at CC. Had the 805 for $839 and with the 10% off coupons you can find on the internet, would have been a steal. By the time I made up my mind to buy the 805 and return the 605 the price jumped back up. Which I would have made my decision earlier.

I have read that the Onkyo's do not really decode DTS HD-MA. That they just take the core 1.5mbs track and play that. Can anyone confirm this? Also, has anyone played a BD with a TrueHD (ie; Ghost Rider)or DTS HD-MA (ie; X-men 3) and have had it light up on their receiver as being recognized and decoded?

You should really go to the AVSforum.com for this stuff, (I've been looking at a lot of the issues going on with the 605 and 805 since I was looking at buying one someday soon). That said, people seem to be frustrated that the TrueHD does not light up. Why? TrueHD is provided bitstream. At the moment most players do not send TrueHD bitstream, they send it HDMI. The problem is, HDMI doesn't send bitstream. It does however send the signal uncompressed as PCM. So, the "multi-channel PCM" lights up. You are still getting the uncompressed soundtrack, but until they provide an update or a new player that can send it as bitstream, you simply won't get the nifty "TrueHD" to light up. But don't pity yourself too much, your still getting uncompressed sound. More than most of us. (don't know the issues with DTS HD) Take it easy, |

If anyone is using this reciever with the PS3, under the PS3's system settings menu > BD/DVD playback sub-menu, there's the audio option to change your HDMI audio output from LPCM to Bitstream. If you switch that to bitstream, does the TrueHD indicator now light up? Just curious.

Let me say first I am still a novice at this but, on page 66 of the 605 manual it lists listening modes. "Dobly Pro Logic IIx expands any 2-channel source for 7.1 channel playback. It provides a very natural and seamless surround sound experience that fully envelops the listener. As well as music and movies, video games can also benefit from the dramatic spatial effects and vivid imaging. If your're not using any surround back speakers, Dolby Pro Logic II will be used instead of Dolby Pro Logic IIx." Unless I am missing something it does indeed.

There is only on complaint I have for the receiver thus far after owning is for about a month. And that is the upconversion from component to HDMI. I have my Xbox 360 hooked into my receiver using the component cables that came with the Xbox 360, then from there I have two outputs, the one component using Monster Cable Ultra 1000 THX Component cable and the HDMI is a Monster Cable Ultra 1000 THX HDMI cable. When I use the component out everything looks great in 1080i but when I switch over to the HDMI output for component upconversion, everything looks severly degraded. I thought this may be due to the fact with components having the problem with down converting 1080i to 720p, but even the 720p over component looks better than the HDMI at 1080i.
