Default 7/29 Jack Ryan Titles: Reviews?

Quick question, has anyone out there seen the PQ of the Jack Ryan releases? Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, and Sum of All Fears?

Oh - and if they are the HD DVD transfers, what was the PQ like? I remember that the DVDs upconverted quite well - anyone out there with the HD DVDs that can let me know how they are?

First on my list are the two Harrison Ford ones,

Thanks in advance, chaps.

I know Patriot Games has made it out, but I don't know about the others

The very very few HD DVDs that made it out are said to have DNR issues

That would be horrible if the blus have DNR issues because the first 3 JR titles are ones that I really want.

lol - Alex, I read through all of it, and in the end, all it had as far as a technical review were the following little blurbs:

Quote:
All of the films are presented in their original aspect ratios of 2.35:1 with an HD AVC encode. ‘The Sum of All Fears’ predictably looks the best due to its newer age with vibrant colors and deep blacks. Some edge enhancement here and there keeps the transfer from being perfect but there’s no question this is an HD transfer.

The rest of the pics, spread out over four years, show a little age with ‘Patriot Games’ being the weakest of the transfers but all are quite respectable. This will definitely be the best these films will look at home for a long, long time.

Each pic gets its own Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 tracks that get the job done with the more impressive sounds increasing as the age of the film decreases.

Honestly, i didn't read it at all....that because it was a HD-DVD Review!

The other link was just some random guy talking about the packaging...should've watched the rest of it before posting...almost fell asleep going into the 1st minute.

I've never seen any of these Jack Ryan movies.

Are they worth a blind buy?

HD-DVD is only a lil better looking than standard DVD, I've heard.

IMO, the best of these is Clear and Present Danger. Harrison Ford does his second turn as Jack Ryan and stars with Willem DeFoe. One scene, in particular (which I won't divulge cause it's too damn good) is worth the price of admission alone.

Sum of all Fears has Ben Affleck plays the Jack Ryan character (cause he was playing him as a young agent). This one was the weakest of the 4 for me.

Red October is a great one if you love sub films. Alec Baldwin plays Jack Ryan and co-stars with Sean Connery and Sam Neill. Definitely worth a buy.

Patriot Games has Harrison Ford first taking over the Jack Ryan role. Sean Bean also co-stars as an IRA terrorist who seeks revenge against Ryan for an earlier even that occured in the movie. This one was OK, but I thought it could have been better. I'd rent it first.

I'm just hoping these aren't ports from that OTHER format.

Strangely some retailers have starting shipping Patriot Games and Top Gun, but no sign of the other Jack Ryan films yet.

Screeners for those two 7/29 Paramount films are out, but I have yet to receive the other titles scheduled for that day.

To take a quick snippet from the website ryookhi posted -

Quote:
This came out on HD as part of the Jack Ryan Collection (reviewed HERE) but this must be an improved image as the feature film on the Blu-ray takes up a whopping 35.6 Gig of the dual-layered disc - more than the capacity of an entire HD-DVD. Bottom line - it looks superior than I anticipated but is a small notch below modern film transfers on Blu-ray. Either way it looks far better than it ever has before for home theater devotees. If you are so inclined - you can see the pores of Harrison Ford's skin (Anne Archer too).
Bit of an amateurish look at the PQ review, but well enough for me to pick this one up! Especially for the $20 that CC is offering it for,

DVD Beaver Review: The Hunt For Red October

My favorite part:

If it matters, Patriot Games and Hunt for Red October looked really good to me on HD DVD. I found that Jack Ryan set at the beginning of the year but have only watched those two.

I'd imagine Paramount is using the same master/transfer for these, but who knows I could be wrong. I haven't read up on it.
