Synopsis:

Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company’s brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test – charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. Watched this last night. It reminded me a little of Under the Skin which I also enjoyed. I wasn't digging it too much for the first 15-20 minutes but it all came around. I think this is something that will improve with repeat viewings. The acting and visual effects were all great too. Can't wait to see what Alex Garland directs next...his style for this incorporated elements of Kubrick.

I wasn't quite bowled over like most the reviews implied, but it certainly comes recommended. It's very clever and thought provoking with tons of great ideas, fit in a very tense and thrilling framework. In other words, exactly everything Transcendence failed at achieving.

I've really enjoyed watching Alex's career blossom. From author to screenwriter to now director. I met Alex back when he did his first book tour for The Beach and he was such a good guy, really down to earth and very personable. Ever since I read his short novel The Coma I knew this guy had talent that would go beyond just a first book. For those that enjoy reading check out The Coma it's a bit slow but it's a book that stays with you after you've finished it.
I can't wait to check out this film and see where his future projects take him.

Oh. That Under the Skin reference is worrying because I didnt like that - and I really wanted to as well.

Only the ending reminded me vaguely of Under the Skin - you'll see why. It's not exactly the same though so don't be put off.

That's a movie I tried so hard to like as well. Just couldn't get into it though.

I saw this last night and enjoyed it.

Some things didn't make sense, but on the whole it was a good psychological thriller. It was very thought provoking, which I like.

[Show spoiler]I wasn't expecting the ending, so that was pretty surprising.

The special effects were some of the best I've ever seen, especially for a small film like this. It's very impressive to be up there with the big blockbusters.

The cast were very good too.

Very much looking forward to it, am always a sucker for films about Artificial Intelligence and Dystopian Sci Fi (which it sounds like it might be).

It's not at all the same, really, except that it's a low-budget SF film, with very few characters and a (less) disturbing tone. And, yes - some stuff to do with skin...

But EX MACHINA is a good deal more accessible I think and will develop a cult following over time. All the cast are good but I must say that I'm more and more impressed with Oscar Isaac every time I see him.

The Machine is a no brainer if you like AI movies.
