Default Craigslist Oddity?

This is as off-topic as things get, but I figured I'd see if anyone else ever experienced a similar thing.

I responded to an ad for something on Craigslist (I won't say what, but it has a monitor and a keyboard, and a mouse), and the guy quickly responded to say it was still available. After sending a follow up to find out about meeting him to check the item/potentially buy it, he never responded.

Two days later I emailed him with a different email address/name asking if it was still available. He responded soon after, saying it was. I sent a follow up asking about buying it, and he never responded.

So I don't think this is a scam in the sense of some guy trying to rip people off, because he's not asking for money, or even responding to follow-up emails. Is he just humoring himself by seeing how many times people will email him?

dude, most women on there are hookers, maybe they were working

NO seriously, CL is horrible. I listed a PS3 80gb MGS4 bundle and within miniutes I get bogus buy emails of people wanting me to ship it to Nigeria, pay me 20,000.00 and me wire the rest western union, and numerous other worn out scams. I have only had one serious bite and that was for a wii months ago, sold it via local pickup.
here are some examples:
Quote:
Thanks for getting back to me.Just get back to me with your PayPal Email id for the instant payment and i will include $200 for the shipping cost down to my daughter schooling oversea as a BIRTHDAY Gift because this is what she want as her birthday gift and I would have love to receive the item by my self but am also out of state.and i will prefer you shipping this item to my daughter Via 8-10 Days Global Express International Mail (EMS) so get back to me now so i can make the Instant Payment Via PayPal to your account.
sure, by the time its out of the country I will get the check back NSF

Quote:
hello Dear, I am writing to know if this item is available and still in good condition. I will be paying via paypal. kindly accept my offer of $600 USD plus $200 USD for shipping via EMS .Thanks.
yea, kindly overpaying

These are what idiots do all day, scam unsuspecting people

Ive sold a couple games on craigslist and never had any problems but like jwbudd said i did get a couple emails that i ignored from buyers who "were out of town" and could send check via western union blah blah blah, just deleted those. One thing ive noticed though lot of people trying to lowball.

I am trying to sell a couple cars for my parents on Craigslist and was thinking of accepting one of these scam deals then reporting the guy who sends the check. One more scammer off the streets.

Craigslist can be a great place to sell itmes (since there is no sellers fee and you meet the buyer). Based on my selling experience, I've had no problems with buyers on there. You just have to be careful though.

Every time I've sold anything it's been CIP(cash in person), and never at my house. I meet in a mall parking lot, which just happens to have a police sub-station in plain view.I still get people showing up in person trying to pass off personal checks, money orders or once even a payroll check signed over to me. What I hate the most though is after agreeing on a time, place and amount they show up and want to haggle.

I've had a few decent experiences in the past, including purchasing a drum set on CL. It was a bit scary driving to some stranger's house to check out the drums before buying them, but I couldn't reasonably expect him to bring them somewhere public.

The odd thing about this other situation that I posted about is that the guy isn't asking for any money or any sort of odd payment. He simply only writes one email back saying the item is still available, but won't respond to any follow-up emails.

I'm tempted to use a 3rd random email address with a 3rd random person's name, to see if he quickly responds to that email, but ignores any subsequent ones.

Doing some amateur P.I. work, I found some tech-related forums the guy frequents (though not Blu-Ray.com), and he's made several posts about this item I was trying to buy, presumably around the time he bought it. So he certainly has it, but he might just be joking about selling it.

I sold a car and my 720p projector on Craig's List. Zero issues with either deal. I only accepted cash!

It's usually pretty obvious when someone is trying to scam you. If it is too good to be true, it most likely is.

As long as you are street smart, craigslist is freakin awesome. Ive literally sold/bought THOUSANDS in stuff (tvs, game systems, blu-ray discs, games, furniture, and a LOT more). Heck, i posted a job ad for a buddy and he had 50+ phone calls the first day alone. I love me some craigslist!

He's probably holding out for a local sale. Or he may be waiting for someone to make up their mind. Or he's a lonely ass.

I bought some Planet of the Apes Collectible figurines (you've probably seen them) from a woman, who I met at a local coffee shop....

I'd never have someone come to my house....... wouldn't want them to see my stuff and get any crazy ideas.

As with a local paper ad or Ebay / Craigslist, buyer and seller beware. Take the necessary precautions and you should be fine. If the deal is too good to be true, most likely it is...

good thinking, i have sold a few items on craigs list as well but always met them at the local food store or a mall. dont want anyone geting any ideas about anything in my house or even know where i live. alot of crazy people out there that just scope and reply to ads to find out where you live and will rob you be safe people

Those are the options I was thinking to. I'd peg them at 0% (since I'm local), 5%, and 95% respectively.

I never used CL but from what you write I am guessing it is one of two things.

1) it is a scam, if the guy is not for real and neither is the object then he can't show it to you. So by you asking to look at it from the start you make yourself useless for the scam.

1.1) not a full scam, but the object might not be in "showable" condition and the guy hopes he can sell it sight unseen

2) the guy thinks you are a waste of time. But then again if it is not selling then why not waste the time.
