this is a good price for season 1 blu ray.
I sold my Enterprise DVDs last year to.
But for under £13 as have some money so ordered this today.
Hopefully season 2 goes down some time.

I thought the 3rd and 4th series were the best.

Star Trek needs to be more serialised, with a deeper over arching story throughout a season. Each episode being completely different every week with no connection to the episode before or after it gets boring after a while.

DS9 was one of the closet to fixing it but still wasn't quite there.

If they ever make a new series then they should definitely change it up and not just have random stories each week.

I didn't dislike the last two seasons but I've always enjoyed the standalone episodes more. I think shows with an background arch work best, as new viewers can jump in at any point but these days season arches are more popular (although most shows with them have fewer episodes than Star Trek's 26-22 shows a year).

The problem with an arch is you risk losing viewers if they're not interested in overall outline and to some the notion of the Enterprise on a revenge mission was off-putting. But that was set in stone as the Enterprise was on course for the Xindi homeworld that season.

The X-Files had a good balance with 8-10 shows a year to the series arch with the rest concentrating on Monster of the Week shows, that ways you can leave the showrunners to concentrate on the big-issues and let the staff contribute to the rest.

While DS9 wasn't always linked from week to week (though there was that 6 episode arc which kicked off S6 and the last 10 eps of S7) it had a strong sense of continuity which every other Trek show lacked up until ENT S3. The station being in one place meant that problems couldn't just be ignored and things couldn't just be reset, and they were still following up on things in S7 that were broached way back in S1.

But I do agree that they need to look towards long term arcs should Trek ever get resurrected for TV. The standalone eps can be great fun but after approximately 726 episodes they kinda did all they could, and so IMO they need to concentrate on proper arcs to get the most out of the characters rather than 'tech breakdown/monster/general predicament of the week'.

I'm somewhere in the middle - the problem with standalone episodes is when each season lasts 20+ episodes, as often you feel like you're just watching episodes so you don't miss anything important or watching them to get to the big episodes. So I think 20+ episode seasons are better when they're serialized, because then you have an incentive to watch every episode (although it does make it awkward when rewatching the show, as you can't just watch which ever episode you want).

Equally though if they're aren't a few one-off episodes then it can feel like the season is dragging. So as chip pointed out, background arcs are best, so there's a good mixture standalone and serialized episodes.

SG-1 was another show which had a good balance of standalone episodes and story-arch episodes, the first few seasons had the background arch of Daniel Jackson finding his wife, the on-going battle with the Goa'uld et cetra and the writers could dip into that whenever they wanted to but the basic premise of the show was a new planet through the Stargate every week. I think if a show is true to that then you can play around with it but if you try and change course, change the show's core values then it can have a jarring affect.

As Enterprise season 1 is now insanely cheap on Amazon, does anybody know if it's likely to still come with the slipcase?

Since they've been on sale a few weeks now, a few members have had them with slips. I think there's a very good chance with Enterprise's 4 seasons you'll get slips.

Yeah, with it being Enterprise it's highly likely that the first print runs haven't sold out yet, so slips ahoy!

Cynical, but undoubtedly true!

Just hope CBS don't see that as any kind of yardstick for DS9's popularity and likely performance on BD.....
