Just saw it, and it was a good conversion. I had thought it was real 3D, but then heard it was a conversion. But conversions have been getting much better lately, so I figured what the hell. I mean, you're not going to see this movie for the story and acting -- you want to see mind-blowing sci-fi visuals. And they should be even more mind-blowing in 3D.
But yeah, the conversion was good. As always, my stupid eagle eye will pick out little bits here and there (like a hand holding a cell phone that's on the same level as the phone, disconnected from the wrist), but overall, it was a solid 3D experience. Not so much in the way of pop-outs, but it just adds a lot of depth and realism to the glorious sci-fi visuals. (Although there was one scene where Eddie Redmayne was leaning menacingly into the camera, and his face was popping off nicely... ![]() |

Apparently this flick is not being received well:
'Jupiter Ascending,' 'Seventh Son' Make For Two Big Flops in One Weekend It’s not very often that Hollywood unleashes two major theatrical bombs over the same weekend. But that’s what happened when Jupiter Ascending and Seventh Son both crashed and burned in U.S. theaters on Friday. Warner Bros.’ Jupiter Ascending, starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, is quickly dropping in estimates to a thin $18 million weekend at the box office. With a budget north of $175 million, the Wachowskis’ sci-fi fantasy tentpole could lose tens of millions barring a dramatic turnaround overseas. The forecast for Universal and Legendary’s long-delayed Seventh Son, starring Jeff Bridges, is just as gloomy. The medieval fantasy tentpole has already projected a loss of $85 million, as Variety exclusively reported this week, despite earning $82 million at the international box office. It’s on track for only $6.6 million in its U.S. debut. Neither of the b.o. calamities are entirely surprising—both big-budget movies were long-delayed due to poor tracking and Paramount’s The Spongebob Movie, which is soaking up $53 million this weekend, was originally projected to win the weekend. Still, the lousy performances are a black eye for investors and filmmakers. Andy and Lana Wachowski, masterminds of The Matrix, have yet to find commercial or critical success since their Keanu Reeves trilogy. Their previous two films, Cloud Atlas and Speed Racer, made a combined $67 million domestically. The stylish filmmakers were hoping that heartthrob Channing Tatum, whose found box office success with pics like 22 Jump Street and Magic Mike, could attract more younger viewers. But Tatum is barely recognizable in Jupiter Ascending, looking more like an elf than a sexy bounty hunter. The sci-fi space opera, which was originally supposed to open last summer, earned a B-Cinemascore from moviegoers and a not-so-fresh 22% rating on RottenTomatoes. Jeff Bridges, meanwhile, is experiencing his own financial folly of late. The Seventh Son actor’s last two wide releases, R.I.P.D. and The Giver, both bombed at the box office. R.I.P.D. Seventh Son, directed by Sergei Bodrov, began filming in March 2012 and has had four different release dates. Co-starring Julianne Moore and Ben Barnes, the movie is based on Joseph Delaney’s literary series The Spook’s Apprentice, about a young hero with magical abilities. Next week, Universal’s Fifty Shades of Grey is expected to heat up an otherwise chilly winter at the box office. Despite Warner Bros.’ smash hit American Sniper, several movies have tanked domestically, including Johnny Depp’s Mortdecai and Michael Mann’s Blackhat starring Chris Hemsworth. |

Thanks for the info Taygan. These movies would have done better during the spring possibly, but definitely not right next to each other. Mainstream audiences in the US can be very picky. A lot of fans of these type of movies probably stay home and wait for it to hit video.
I had a very good time watching Seventh Son 3D (really good medium to strong 3D), now just have to see Jupiter Ascending 3D next when there is time. 7th Son was released awhile back overseas, and earned 35$ million in 2014 it's reported, so hopefully that will offset some of the costs and low US box office. The Wachowski's need to get back to the Matrix and develop some new story lines. Or a sequel to V for Vendetta with Hugo Weaving again as V (prequel). |

I went to see it this afternoon and its a truly awful film. Kunis and Tatum are pretty bad, the movie is a jumbled mess, and the story sucks. Whatever magic the Wachowskis had, they appear to have lost it.
The one thing I will say is that the 3D is quite good. Too bad the movie is so terrible, I won't be picking this up on 3D Blu. |

Saw this on Friday. The 3D was so-so...mild or medium with some stronger but not very strong 3D in many scenes. The most impressive 3D shot was not of action but of some plants/flowers and bees. The 3D was adequate for the most part but not in any way great
As for the movie itself it felt like a sci fi chick flick at times and at other times like a great space epic. The jokes and humor fell flat along with much of the romance but the large scope of the movie and the frequent action kept me entertained. 2.5 / 5 |

I saw this in Imax 3d yesterday and while I left feeling very confused about what I thought of the film, I couldn't shake off a feeling of awe of what I had witnessed and I couldn't stop thinking about the film all day at work.
The 3d was absolutely amazing in my opinion, with high medium to strong 3d frequently throughout. The aerial battle/chase in Chicago at the beginning is one of the greatest action sequences ever made and the 3d really made me feel like I was flying and it made my stomach churn a bit because the 3d was that immersive and strong in that sequence. There's so much to talk and debate about the film that I feel like I need another viewing and I do want to see it again. The Wachowski's may not have their Matrix magic back, but they still put on a hell of a show and make you think about the wondrous storytelling possibilities of cinema |

Sean Bean was wonderful in his somewhat limited role. The screentime he got he made the most of
I agree that the Chicago scene was breathtaking and the 3D in the flying sequences does give you that sense of height and a lump in your stomach. That scene alone makes it worth seeing |

Also Kunis, she wasn't a good pick here. I think she is very limited as an actress and she doesn't even come close to pulling this movie off. Tatum, he doesn't seem too interested and is just picking up a pay check. There is a chunk of the film where they got him shirtless and he isn't even in great shape here. Someone in back of me said, put a shirt on, he didn't even bother to get in great shape like Magic Mike, so why have him running around with no shirt on. Redmayne does the best with what he has to work with but that wasn't much. Sean Bean is pretty good and has a decent size role. Both of these guys can deliver but they just don't have much to work with here. Honestly, the Wachowskis missed the boat here big time. Again, other than the 3D looking pretty terrific, this is a worthless movie. |

Who knows, after the financial failure of this film, Cloud Atlas and Speed Racer, they may have burnt up all the clout they had with Warner Brothers. Not too sure they'll finance another large film without the promise of another Matrix film. Either that or they'll need to go to another studio that will take them.

I kept thinking of Hamilton's performance when watching Milas playing as the witch. James Franco seemed miscast also as the Wizard, but just my opinion. Tatum was good in the GI Joe Movies and White House Down. Haven't seen his other films but hoped he would capture the action of his prior films. Glad to hear Sean Bean has a more significant role. I'll probably check it out to see his performance and the reported great action scenes. And the 3D too. ![]() Thanks for the heads up. Quote:
From what I can find, mostly rumors online from awhile ago. I'd want to see a "rebooting" of the Matrix computer, with a new One who is already self aware, maybe a female lead, and working their way to free human minds from the Matrix Robots once and for all. They could add all new rules to the Matrix to set it apart from the first film, with new enemy types. |

Collider.com had a great interview with the wachowskis but they gave a very confusing answer as to whether the matrix trilogy would be rereleased in 3d and I couldn't tell whether they said yes or no. The matrix trilogy is absolutely perfect for 3d and I was shocked how many 3d esque shots were in all the movies. The 3d conversio needs to happen!
