Default PS3 SACD question.

I ordered a SACD from amazon for shits and giggles. Just curious if I rip the cd to my harddirve will it save on there and play back in the 5.1?

If it's a hybrid disc, you can rip the standard CD layer but that will be stereo only. I don't believe there's any CD/DVD drive for a PC that can read the SACD layer on the disc so there's no way to get the 5.1 version ripped. (okay, maybe I shouldn't say "no way" but it won't as straightforward as just ripping the disc.)

to put it roughly (sorry, havent finished my morning coffee just yet)

theres a reason why sacd/dvd-audio, was built that way - to make sure that others wont be able to 'rip' the higher quality of sound that they have, and makes you use the multichannel analogs to get em.

the stereo sound, yes, you can get, but the 5.1's arent available for you to 'rip' because its encoded differently.

While you can't rip the SACD layers of a hybrid SACD, there are software tools to rip a dvd-audio if one is so inclined.

I don't believe the OP had a PC in mind at all. The optical drive of the first two generations of PS3 can read SACD. Ripping or copying of music from the high-density layer however is not supported so the answer sadly remains "no".

PS3 nowadays does support MP3 Surround but only for decoding i.e. playback, not for encoding i.e. ripping.

In general, for questions regarding PS3 on SACD check the FAQ or this thread.

ETA: Only after replying I noticed this is an old thread. No idea why it turned up today in my Google alerts then.
