United Kingdom Entertainment One, Lionsgate, and StudioCanal releases

I recently picked up the UK eOne Blu-ray of Looper (tempted by the lenticular slip), and noticed more banding than I remember viewing on my US copy.

A friend of mine also informed me that the eOne Blu of 12 Years a Slave is also inferior to Fox's US version. That's just his opinion, I can't say since I only own the Fox disc.

Does anyone know if eOne uses previously existing transfers, or do they do it all themselves? I could very well be seeing things with this banding issue, but I just wanted to know if anyone else has noticed anything questionable about eOne's releases.

UPDATE:
Use this thread to discuss eOne, StudioCanal, and Lionsgate releases. Highlight any sub-par blu-rays you've purchased so others don't make the mistake

I can tell you Parker has awful banding issues. I also noticed some during Insidious 2.

I've been wary of their releases for some time now.

One key thing is never pay full price for an eOne release. Their prices tend to drop drastically over just a few weeks.

They are the new Entertainment in Video

Or you can just tell me I'm going nuts, I won't be offended.
eOne use to use US transfers but recently they been using their own and been quite downhill transfers and not very good. You get the odd one but I rather import then buy from them again until they start using the US transfers.

Same transfer new encodes. Lionsgate and Studio Canal (Rush is one example) releases can occasionally have banding on them too. eOne's Dark Skies has wicked banding.

.
Ah crap, I literally just asked about the UK version a few days on here but nobody replied. My copy is now on the way, so I'll let you know how it looks but i'm towards colour banding. eOne do seem to be very hit and miss. Seems like Blu-ray authoring has gotten slightly worse in the UK with the smaller companies as time's gone on!.

I wouldn't call them a smaller company.

The smaller companies are getting better and better IMO. 88 Films, Odeon, Arrow, Network etc.

It's rare to see comparisons of their releases against the US equivalents. There is some very bad banding on The Master and I'd like to know if it's present on the US disc.

Sorry, yes you're right, Arrow etc are fantastic. Really meant companies that do the big releases for the UK that are different from the US like eOne compared to 20th Century Fox for 12 Years A Slave etc. So smaller in that sense .

Thanks for all of the feedback, glad to know I'm not crazy.

Are there any comparisons at all of US vs. eOne releases?

If you'd like, I can list the truly abysmal releases from eOne in my first post as a sort of go-to guide for future purchases.

Just wanted to reiterate what folks have said above: eOne, StudioCanal and Lionsgate are the pits when it comes to banding. Network's recent reissue of Capricorn One also had much worse banding than the old ITV disc, so I hope that's not an indication that Network's encoding is also going down the gurgler.

How is their release of Maps To the Stars? Was thinking of getting it because it has all the extras not on the US disc...

I believe eOne used to be 'Momentum'.

I find them to be the least worst compared to Lionsgate and StudioCanal. The recent Nightcrawler looked fine to me and I didn't notice any banding.

Nightcrawler was fine, no banding present at all from what I saw. More than likely the same Universal encode used on the UK disc.

I had a look at 12 Years a Slave (eOne release) and it appears to be ok, haven't noticed any banding issues thank god but I've only skimmed through a few scenes throughout the film.

I've also noticed banding on some Artificial Eye releases now, recently got Blue is the Warmest Colour which got 5 stars here for video quality and although it generally looks great, in darker interior scenes there is quite a bit of visible banding, with one moment being horrendously bad.

It's getting really frustrating because there's no need for there to be any if the people involved would just do the encode properly. It doesn't appear connected to bit rates necessarily so I'd love to know what exactly they are doing wrong. Meh, first world problems!

Eone also almost always releases the cut version of movies.

several of their Titles are cut at 12 even when an uncut 15 was an option for the retail release.

just an other reason to avoid them

But how come Studio Canal releases like Evil Dead (2014) and The Guest have a higher video bitrate compared to their US counterparts, Sony and Universal.

Do you know if they have banding?

When you mention Lionsgate do you mean Lionsgate UK only and not US?

I believe both. Several issues have been pointed out on the Mockingjay - Part 1 blu-ray, both the US and UK version.
