Default PS3 DVD Upconverting quality

Hey folks. I'm just wondering if anyone could tell me how good the PS3 upconverts standard dvd's. I've heard some says it's one of the best upconverters out there and I've heard others say that according to their "tests" it doesn't upconvert nearly as well as other "cheaper" dvd players.

Just wondering if anybody has any info to share that might help. Thanks.

Default Maybe the best?

Since the 2.41 update, the PS3 does an outstanding job upconverting. Transformers is the dvd that I watched first and the difference was extemely noticable from before the update.

Hope that helps

honestly in my opinion, it does a horrible job, and I might get flamed for this but compared to the xbox's hd-dvd add-on. total difference, I got one just for upconverting dvds since I found it for 10 bucks and figured it wouldn't prolong the war anymore. But much more sharper on the add-on and the ps3 pretty soft. Sorry guys, but that's just my opinion. And take in that the add-on is using component and the ps3 uses hdmi.

I don't believe the 360 upscales DVDs at all, even with the HD-DVD add-on.

Just curious . . . what type of connection on the 360 were you using for this comparison?

it was a component, but like I said it was just my opinion, unless my eyes lie to me that is what I think, I was switching back and fourth on the sources to see and it was noticable. But according to ricky tee I'm an idiot for having an opinion.

Well . . . if you were using component, then you weren't watching an upconverted signal. The 360 only upconverts over VGA & HDMI, the max is 480p over component due to copyright. I think you may want to do the test again, since you were comparing a 480p signal to whatever setting your PS3 is at. Also, the Xbox 360's DVD player doesn't exactly get rave reviews. But . . . I guess it's possible that, to you, an SD DVD on a crappy DVD player looks better than an upconverted DVD on a good upconverting DVD player, but that seems incredibly odd to me. If your PS3 is hooked up via HDMI, are both the HDMI and component inputs calibrated separately?

It'd be interesting to see. You should do a blind test, post two pics of the same screenshot on both the PS3 and the 360, don't label them, and see who picks what. That'd be sure to spark a good argume . . . er, discussion

I know where you are going with this. I have a PS3 (latest version) and a XBox 360 HDDVD player both connected by HDMI leads to my 1080P Plasma.
When playing normal DVDs it seems that my HD DVD produces a better quality picture than my PS3
In my opinon!
